You *believed* your brother? Jeez, dude, I once convinced my younger brother that I worked the Tuesday-night bow-tying shift for Santa up at the North Pole (in his defense, he was like... four, and he called me on it when he was about six, telling me that not only did I not work for Santa, but that there *is* no Santa). Moral of the story: do not base important decisions upon information from siblings.

In this case, though, your brother's right in that Purdue has a rep for admitting a lot of people and then weeding them out, but if you're pretty diligent and do your work and stay on top of things, you'll be fine and you'll end up with a good degree from a good engineering program. If you were all set to go there before that, then just go there.

Whichever campus you like best. Either is a good engineering school. I think Purdue might be a little better in general, but if you already know where you want to live then go to the closer school. Better contacts and what not.

Also, if you're not willing to take on a 30% drop rate perhaps engineering isn't the best idea. It's hard. It's real hard. But it's worth it.

I really doubt that Purdue kicks 30% of the students out of the school... Normally school kick or suspend if your GPA is < 2.0. I doubt that 30% of the students @ Purdue receives less than a 2.0.

thanks for the input guys!
so finally, Purdue would be a better pick for CompE or EE than UVa for undergraduate studies right??
(p.s. campus location and connections don't really matter much to me)

Minors are not important in decisions.

Honestly, Purdue weeding out ~15% of their student body is a consequence of admitting a lot of slackers and then letting them sink or swim. It wont be that difficult, likely, for someone who can get into much more selective schools.

As for the quality of the programs, I would ignore the statement from your neighbor as it, as far as you know, anecdotal and potentially baseless. Just look at xjis's statistics. Sure Purdue is known for its engineering department (which helps a crapload in USN rankings), but UVa is just an overall solid school with a great program to offer as well.

i can't believe you would actually consider turning down full scholarship offer from UVa for Purdue.

it's not like you are choosing between UVa and MIT.
and UVa has better overal reputation than Purdue anyway, just lower eng. ranking.

Wait, would you be paying a significant amount to go to Purdue, whereas you'd have nearly a full ride to UVA?

Not worth going into debt for Purdue, unless you really really like Purdue and wouldn't be happy at UVA.
