Why JHU?

I'm looking at top colleges right now as applications get down to the wire, but unlike Duke and similar universities (UPenn, Stanford), I don't hear of many ups for John Hopkins. In fact, all I see are the stereotypes of JHU's "cut-throatedness" and the necessity of a bulletproof vest for the Baltimore area.

I will pursue some undergrad major along the lines of pre-med (bio, chem), and will advance to med school, but I care about much more than numbers - I want a balanced campus life in which academics do not consume my life. Could someone on the inside or an ex-Hopkins student fill me in on why/why not JHU is the place to be?

Thanks!

Hi!I am thinking about applying to JHU,but from the college website I can't really discover a lot about the math department...
In terms of concentration, could someone please tell me how good is JHU's statistical math, and is it a major and minor at the same time?

Also,I've long heard about the IR major in JHU.But how big/small are the class sizes? And how are the intern chances?

Thank you!

Financial Aid

Well I applied for Financial Aid with my ED application for Hopkins. I know that Hopkins is "need-blind" so to speak when it comes to applicants. However, I am wondering, if you are in need of a lot of aid, will it drastically lower your chances of getting in (especially in this type of economy)? The problem is I would not be able to afford Hopkins and some people I've talked to have stated being in need of financial assistance reduces your chances quite a bit.

so can you tell me 5 things i need to know before deciding whether or not to apply to johns? like the most important 5 things i'd need to "be" or "like" to be happy there? (i.e. big sports culture or liberal or outgoing or greek life, etc)

also, is it really science/math geared? i'm much more of a humanities person.
