Housing for mid-year transfers

I just got accepted to transfer into Rice for January 2010.

I'm pretty excited but I'm a little worried about the housing situation. I'm in Missouri now and I won't know anybody at Rice (and in Houston) at first, so my top priority upon arriving will just be to get to know some people. Because of this I'd love to get in a dorm, but that's probably not likely for a mid-year transfer.

But I can't seem to find any info at all on how off-campus housing works for mid-year transfers. Is it basically left up to me to scramble for an apartment in Houston late December? I plan on talking to Rice about this in detail, but I thought it would be worth seeing if any Rice students here knew!

Thanks very much!

The prompt-The quality of Rice's academic life and the residential college system is heavily influenced by the unique life experiences and cultural traditions each student brings. What perspective do you feel that you will be able to contribute to life at Rice?

1) Well, i'm chinese so i could talk about cultural differences (but i feel like this is cliche? idk..)
2) i teach younger kids piano..i could talk about the perspective of being a teacher as well as a student
3) i could talk about how i've seen my parents live the american dream
4) i could talk about music and how it's impacted me (however, i've kinda already touched on this in my commonapp essay

any ideas?
