Pros and Cons for EA Fafsa/CSS

D has audition early December and if I get the FAFSA and CSS done prior then (if she gets accepted) will get the benefit of knowing the complete package. I was wondering if there was any benefit to knowing the merit package without the need package. I have some concern that we will not qualify for much on the need side and wondered how that might impact what is offered on the merit side (from conservatory). I hope that explanation is clear. Thanks for any insight.

Question about Juilliard prescreen requirements for flute?

Hi everyone,

I'm really confused about what Juilliard wants on their prescreening CD. Actually, I understand everything except for this part, here's the exact wording:

"Two contrasting movements selected from works of different styles or periods"

Does that mean one movement each from two works, two movements each from two works... or what? I tried calling them and they told me to email the admissions office... and when I did that, I got an automated email saying I'd get a response in 7-10 days and to email them again if I didn't (huh? haha.)

I'd love it if someone could clear this up for me (December 1st is closer than ever!)

why do audition committees want to know where else you will be auditioning?

Why do they want to know where else you are applying/auditioning? Is there any way your answers can be used "against" you and affect your acceptance into a program? I'm speaking about large publics, not the highly selected conservatories. If they know you are auditioning at school X and they realize you have other viable options are they more likely to offer open spots to someone else? I just don't understand why they want to know. If they ask which school is your top choice, or if they ask you if they are your top choice, what is the best answer? I would think that "yes, this school is one of my top choices..." is a good answer, correct?

Adding second instrument

Hey guys, it's the mom of the 11-year old clarinet player again. You've all given me such great advice that I thought I'd come back again and ask your advice and your indulgence!

Last night was parent-teacher conferences at school (he's in a music magnet program) and his teacher, who has a great reputation, told me that he'd like to see my son add saxophone now that he's become proficient with the clarinet, but maintain the clarinet as his first instrument for orchestra purposes and because my son is best friends with the clarinet.

So when does one generally add a second instrument and what is the usual way to do that? Any advice is, as always, very much appreciated.
