Second bachelor's degree? (Microbiology to Accounting)

I've already done some research on the advantages/disadvantages of a second bachelor's degree and the concensus seems to be to enter a graduate program instead. However, I am not sure I want to go that route.

I graduated summa cum laude with a BS in Microbiology in 2006 with the hope of entering veterinary school. For various reasons, I decided not to pursue this path. I was unsuccessful finding employment in my field of study after graduation, so I have been working a 'temporary' job at a credit union for the past 3 years until I could find something in the Microbiology field. There are jobs about there, but I'm lacking job-related experience and am restricted by my geographic area. My current position is low paying and I really dislike the work EXCEPT for the tasks that involve assisting the accounting department. I would like to pursue a career as an accountant; however, I've discovered this a little too late.

I was recently accepted into a university program to obtain a second bachelor's degree. I will need an additional 57 credits to obtain the degree - so it seems doable. However, I am a leary about obtaining a second bachelor's and be unable to find a job afterwards. I also understand there is limited financial aid available. I have saved enough to take care of my living expenses for two years, but will definitely need help with tuition. I know grants are unavailable, but can you obtain scholarships for a second bachelor's?

My degrees have basically no overlap (aside for gen ed reqs), so I would essentially need to get a bachelor's in accounting to qualify for a master's program. I am not as interested in taking individual courses (non-degree seeking) as it will probably take 3 years before I can complete the prerequisites and a graduate degree. If for whatever reason I didn't get accepted into graduate school or something happened where I did not pursue a graduate degree, I would have nothing to show for those courses.

Anyways, I guess I'm just looking for any thoughts/advice anyone has about my situation..... thanks!

Hello forum.

Currently I am in my first semester at an accredited MFA program in Studio Art/Curatorial practices. I was admitted and immediately switched to this program after completing a BFA in the same. Half way through this semester I started realizing how much I do not want to be in an expensive private school for two more years (my loans are about to reach 90,000 in total) and would rather save about 50,000 extra and finish up my MFA at a state school later on. In the mean time I am interested in getting a Bachelors of Sciences, as I have always been interested in more than just art. I crunched the math and even with no scholarships what so ever I could get these two degrees for around 10,000-15,000 less than just getting the one MFA degree at my current school.

This sliding tuition scale all relies heavily on if I can start over at a junior college level and knock out the remaining courses I could get a cheaper rate before moving on to my BS. I assume I'm eligible for some of my BFA credits to transfer into the program.

I'm still not exactly sure how this works however, anyone who has done something similar please let me know

Help My Pal Out: GED and CLEP

Howdy,

I have a pal who passed their GED and was looking into taking some CLEP tests.

This is a fellow who humbly passed their GED and I tried to be nice and help them with their final review for the testing a while back. If they told me of any of this way earlier, I could have been a bigger help, that is all I am saying.

They would like to take at least four CLEP tests or a maximum of six CLEP tests. He wants this to be his New Year Resolution and I think that cool.

I am to be moving after a while and I told my pal that I would at least help him get things organized with all of this. I would love to learn more of the application process for the year 2010 and these tests please. The odds are high I might grow confused, because I will be studying for and taking the GRE and MAT in the year 2010, so I would like to learn more of the CLEP(S) and be helpful now (prior to 2010).

They would like to go to Community College and major in Liberal Arts, nothing more. I have a feeling that he wants to see what he can do with the CLEP tests as a little test of faith if he could hack it as an online CC student. This fellow runs the register and does basic level stocking at the drug store I work for as a Pharmacy Tech and he studied for the GED by himself with two books.

What are either four or six CLEP tests that you guys think would really make a difference with regards to going from humbly passing the GED and desiring to go to CC?

I graduated from high school in 2004, and briefly attended college in 2005. I rushed into starting and realized the major was not the career path I wanted to take, and I dropped out. I'm almost 24 now, have had time to think about my career plans and would like to go back to school. Would I be considered a transfer student even though I didn't finish or a freshman? I'm not sure which app to fill out. Thanks in advance!
