Hispanic and Private Merit Scholarships-Which ones are worth applying to???

My DS is almost done with his college apps so last night he turned his attention to private and hispanic merit scholarship opportunities. Some look like they require a lot of work, others like so many people apply (i.e. 38000 for 600 awards) that it may appear pointless to apply for them. So my question is, if you or your child received an award, could you post it here. Also which scholarships do you think are worth apply for??

My DS is not afraid of working hard for the scholarships but with finals and a few more college apps to do, he wants to make sure he is not wasting his time on a scholarship that he has a very small success of receiving. Any other advice, tips etc about private scholarships would also be appreciated.

Thanks.

National Hispanic College Fair

I learned that my city will be hosting a national college fair directed at Hispanic High School students next month. Here is the link for the organization that puts them on.
http://www.ccnhcfcollegefairs.com/Registration.php

It appears that they are free to attend and that they may pay for transportation from schools. Although some dates have past already, there looks like there are 10 more cities on the list. thought I would post this since colleges my son is applying to will be there.

If anyone has attended this fair, could they please post their experience.
thanks, itsv

Question about race with applications

I'm the father of a set of twins who are both currently applying to a number of different schools for admission as students in the fall. Essentially, I was adopted at birth and was raised in a caucasian home. As an adult, I recently found out I was born of hispanic parents. Neither of my parents (adoptive and biological) went to college and both were of very modest upbringing.

Since my appearance has never really given me any specific reason to know my ethnic background, I have simply always checked caucasian boxes on all applications. My kids have done the same.

Considering these factors, what do I classify myself as? What do my kids classify themselves as? This could have a profound impact on financial aid and scholarships. I'd never want to put my kids college admissions in jeopardy if they were accused of claiming to be something they may not be able to prove. Can anyone shed any light on their experiences or share how schools know if these applicants are indeed what they claim to be.

Recruitment Emails From Ivies?

Ok so whats up with the emails from Penn, Yale and Harvard? I LOVE getting them but I have been told it doesnt actually mean anything if harvard sends you an email. I get another email from harvard, the latino department, saying I should apply and congradulating me on outstanding achievements. I feel flattered and stuff, but again that whole "they send it to everyone so people apply" thing rings through my head. Im applying of course, i planned to anyway, but my scores arent like SUPER AMAZING or anything like that. So is it really just to recruit or do they actually care/want you at their school/do you have a shot?

I know about NHRP already..
I'm looking other programs based on merit and not financial need. They can be summer programs, internships, recognition, scholarships, competitions, etc.
Suggestions?
