hey,
i am a sophomore at the academy, and have been reading this forum for a few years now, and thought it was finally time that i posted here. As i said, i am a sophomore, and i am interested in taking a gap year. I have asked around a lot about how the process of leaving and then re-applying works, and have not really been able to get a decisive answer, so though i would see if anyone here knows. My plan is to leave at the end of my 3 degree summer (guess it is 2 degree summer), and go to africa for about 8 or 9 months to work at an orphanage. I am currently a cadet in good standing, never on any type of probations, and am on the comms list. If anyone could give any insight as to how the process works and what factors go into the re-application process, i would really appreciate it. Thanks a lot!

USAFA Chance Me?

Hey, I am Aleksander Wilms, and I was hoping I could have some help with a "chance me" post.

But first, I have several things as well. To start, both of my parents are retired USAF officers. I am also studying a year abroad in Germany as of now (Junior Year 09/10). I won a scholarship called the Congress Bundestag Youth Exchange (CBYX) which is funded by the US State Department, and the German Bundestag (Congress). I have received letters from my local representative, Eric Cantor and from one of the Virginia senators as well. I was hoping I could obtain an appointment from one of these men. That it all I have and so I guess I should list my accomplishments, statistics, and acknowledgements.

Name: Aleksander Wilms
Age:17
Ethnicity: Caucasian
Gender: Male

GPA: 3.5/4
Class Rank: 45/387

SAT- I take in January (I have to wait to go to the Kaiserslautern army base)

I go to a VERY small, rural school, where sports is not big (only 1 Varsity sport, football), and AP classes are extremely limited. As well as being away for my Junior year, I have not had the chance to take the AP courses my school offers.

10th Grade: AP European History

I have some extracurriculars as well:

Boy Scouts
Debate Team (President)
Several automotive car clubs
Competitive paintball
and several hundred hours of volunteer work in Germany as well as in the USA.

My 12th grade plan is as of follows:

AP US government
AP english 12
AP Psychology
AP Chemistry
Trigonometry
Pre Calculus

Thanks for taking the time out to respond to this message, as it helps me knowing what kind of chances, and where I should set my aims.

Umm... Help?

Hey guys, thanks for reading this.
Lets start from the beginning; I've wanted to go to the AFA ever since I've been in 8th grade (it wasn't just "oh, I want to go there," I had a -rabid- passion for the school.) Freshmen year of high school I went to a private school (for the soul reason of the academy) and everything that could have gone bad happened. Eventually, I dragged myself out of that hell and by independent study, managed bring my first semester grades back from the dead. For my second semester, I transferred to the local High school. I spent that whole semester trying to get my life back in order and ended freshman year with a solid 3.0
Because of that year I had pretty much washed my hands of the Air force academy and wanted nothing to even do with it.
Its now my sophomore year, and by a true act of god, my passion for school has been renewed. At the moment I have a 4.0 and I'm taking:
-Biology
-English
-Spanish
-Geometry
-Chemistry
I've Been on AFA mailing list for three years now (so they do have me on some type of list)
I've been a varsity track athlete for the 800m and 1600m since freshman year, this year I'm our XC team's #3 varsity runner. This year I'll also become a varsity 3200m in track.
I do know a lot about AFA, ever since middle school, I've read the 3rd edition AFA cadet book on how to get in and practically have the book memorized.

I'm in the invisible children club at my school and also hold a high position in my schools physical science club

so overall, I just want people-to-people advice on getting into the Academy. I've been out of touch with it for awhile (and if you didn't know, the book I've read is probably really out-of-date)

ps: I'm interested in Aerospace engineering

SAT vs ACT

I just recieved my ACT scores from Oct:

composite: 32
engligh: 29
math: 33
reading: 33
science: 35
writing: isn't graded yet

My highest SAT scores are :

math: 800
reading: 580
writing: 650

This was the first time I took the ACTs and to my surprise I don't think I did that bad.

I looked online for some sort of scale to compare them, but almost everyone I found was different. I know USAFA takes the best of either ACT or SAT but not combined super scores. Do you think they will take the SAT with the perfect math and ok reading or the ACT that is pretty good across the board?

I took the SATs a few weeks ago to try to raise my reading score so hopefully in a few weeks it improved.

Where do I stand in regards to these two sets of scores.

As always thanks for your help!

Thank you to all who have served and sacrificed for all. Our Veterans have had a hand in shaping all that we know today. If you got up this morning and put on a government-issued uniform, then I thank you, too... from the bottom of my heart. :)
