thanks for all of this! even though scholarships are hosted by a particular college, does that mean that scholarship only applies to that school? or is it just a scholarship in general?

SusanMa:
Usually, college sites list scholarships specific to that college PLUS national / state-level scholarships that students from that particular college would be eligible for. High-school sites have a broader scope, as you might expect.

Scholarships - Where to find them

I've run several scholarship workshops... here's what I tell students and parents.

1) Start local
* Looking for scholarships focused on your geographic area is a great place to start your search
* Common organizations that offer scholarships include community foundations, Lion’s Clubs, and Kiwanis Clubs.

2) Check with schools
* If a student already knows where they plan on attending college, they should investigate the opportunities available at that school
* Many schools use the admissions application as the scholarship application, while some have a separate application that will qualify a student for all available awards. The process varies by school.

3) Don't forget to investigate member organizations / associations
* Often times, clubs, unions, or other membership organizations offer scholarships to both their members and children of their members
* A number of companies also offer education reimbursement and scholarships to employees and their families

4) The Internet can be a quick hit
* Scholarship search engines such as www.**************.com / www.Fastweb.com can be great tools for finding scholarships along a number of criteria at once
* These types of sites typically only take ~5 minutes of up-front work to find a personalized list of scholarship awards

A quick note about scholarships and financial aid:
While it is important to look for scholarships to help lower the cost of an education, for most students, completing the FAFSA should be the top priority.

Top 50 schools/scholarships for international students?

Can anyone tell me whether all types of merit scholarships (even full tuition ones) are usually also available to foreign students? Or is there a category national merit scholarships for only US Students and other merit scholarships for both US and non-US citizens?

And which top 50 schools give out substantial merit scholarships to international students? Thanks for sharing.

I noticed one site missing from the lists:

www.ScholarshipExperts.com

1740 Scholarship providers, 4800 scholarship programs, literally billions of dollars in aid. Local, college-specific, major-specific, merit-based, need-based, minority, disability, association membership-based, employment-based, etc.! Fill out a profile and the awards are all strictly filtered to match your individual situation. You might end up seeing slightly fewer awards than at other websites, but they are all awards you will be eligible for.

More info and more accurate than Fastweb, we just have less ads and less publicity.

I believe stacking is when you can add your scholarships up instead of having your merit award & outside scholarships reduce your FAid award.

Aside fro local scholarships I have had the best luck finding "real" scholarships from lists posted on some of the better high school and some college sites. You have to filter through ones that are area or state specific but there are often more obscure national ones buried in the lists. Also try not being so politically correct and use older terminology in google.

You have to check the terms of the scholarship & the U you'll be attending. Many Us & scholarships allow you to have as many scholarships as you are awarded but sometimes there are restrictions & you may have to choose among awards. There is also a distinction between how merit aid & need aid is handled.
