In-State Ohio Tuition for Military

I read somewhere that Ohio has an unusual law that allows military members, veterans, and their dependents to qualify for in-state tuition even if they move to the state the day before registration.

Has anybody taken advantage of this benefit, or know more details about it?

Here you go... the program also has recently been expanded

Ohio Expands Education Benefits for Veterans’ Families

Quote:

Under a new Ohio law, the spouse or dependents of deceased veterans who move to Ohio receive immediate in-state tuition rates as opposed to waiting 12 months to establish residency.

Currently, under the Ohio G.I. Promise, veterans with one year of honorable service, their spouse and dependents that move to Ohio are immediately considered in-state residents for the purposes of tuition, state educational subsidies and financial aid. Active duty, guard, reserve servicemembers, and their families are also eligible for this educational benefit.

Previously only families of servicemembers killed in action were eligible for the Ohio GI Promise. The new law expands these educational benefits to the spouse or dependents of a deceased veteran who move to Ohio even if death occurred after discharge.

In-state tuition for qualified veterans from across the country

Upon moving to Ohio, veterans with one year of honorable service (and their dependents) are immediately considered in-state residents for the purposes of tuition, state educational subsidies and financial aid. Active duty, guard, reserve servicemembers, and their families are also eligible for this educational benefit.
Good luck to you and thank you for your service.

Thanks sybbie. That's exactly the information I was looking for.

Does anyone know if other states have a similar offer, or is Ohio truly unique with this program?

I believe I read Colorado does. Also check out the Yellow Ribbon lists to see what they say by state.

All New Mexico public univerities offer in-state tuition rates to all active duty military personnel, all military veterans, to dependants of any active duty military who live or are stationed in New Mexico, and to dependents of military personnel who lost their lives while on active duty. (Dependents must move to NM within 60 days after the death of the military member.)

No waiting periods. In-state rates effective immediately upon moving to NM.

These tuition waivers are also available to National Guard members and their families.

UMUC - Homepage offers in-state rates to active military. Check the website for current policies about dependents and veterans. There are live classes at or near bases around the world, as well as extensive on-line offerings.
