Appeal on tution HELP!

Hi Im writing an appeal to get a financial obligation relieved. I registered for summer classes this year but I was in the mainland visiting my dad's family, whom ive only met twice in 20 years. It was my plan to be back in Hawaii for the summer courses however, the plans changed and I stupidly did not think to drop the classes because I thought that if i did not pay for the classes by a certain date, they would be automatically dropped. This is how it is For fall and spring semesters. I was dealing with a lot of family problems, plus I was also taking summer courses as well so the last thing on my mind was the summer classes. I checked my university profile a little while after and found out the classes weren;'t dropped. I dropped it but i got a W and apparently the deadline for refund was over. I did not even attend the classes at all and I owe $1860. I wrote a letter of appeal but I need some help with it. Please share any advice on how to improve it.

---------------------------------
To the Department of Registration,

I am writing an appeal on my 2012 summer session tuition for FAM 230 & HWST 107. Due to emotional distress caused by family situations, I was unaware of the deadlines and procedure of the summer session.

As of January 21st to June 1st 2012, I was in Delran New Jersey, visiting my grandmother for the second time in 19 years. I signed up for FAMR 230 and HWST 107, believing I would be back in Hawaii by May. However, I had to extend my trip to stay longer with my grandmother who lives alone, until my father came back from a short trip. Trying to find common ground with a family I never knew, I did not realize that the classes had started resulting in a late drop with a W grade.

This was my first time registering for summer classes. I believed that my classes would be automatically dropped if I were not to pay it by a certain date, which was not the case. Attached are two letters from my instructors verifying that I was never on their attendance record nor did they receive any assignments from me.

If you look at my records I did not have any pending or overdue balances with the UH system before this case and I will ensure it stays clean. Granted, I should have been well aware of the deadlines but given the certain circumstances, I kindly ask you to make an exception just this once and I assure you, this won’t happen again.

Sincerely,

All I can say is I hope you remember this in the future. Imagine writing this to the cable company:

I didn't stay in HI and was out of state so I shouldn't have to pay for what I signed up for.

As an adult you need to realize your financial obligations.
