Student Became Homeless Can FinAid Help him?

My son told me about a classmate who was commuting to school and has become homeless. Can the School's Financial Aid help him (with his financial aid package) and get him into a dorm or off-campus housing?

My son told me that this young man has been sleeping on the subway all night.

Some colleges and universities have emergency funds available to help students in extreme situations like this one. Your son needs to encourage his pal to speak with the dean and with financial aid. While they are waiting for that appointment, your son could lend some floor space to his pal so there isn't any more sleeping on the subway.

I worked at a very large university, but we absolutely would have wanted to know about a student in this situation. We would have counseled him on his aid options, but more important, we would have put him in touch with campus services ... who are in a position to assist him with the non-financial issues in his life. Your son should encourage this young man to visit his campus counseling services as well as his financial aid office.
