We have a bit of an unusual situation which is causing us some confusion. Hoping someone can steer me in the right direction. My Husband and I are separated, we live on opposite ends of the state. I was relocated by my job during my daugther's junior year and she opted to stay with her father through high school graduation. He completed the FAFSA using his information as the custodial parent. My daughter has since graduted from high school and move in with me right before starting college here. Last May the Financial Aid office stated our FAFSA was selected for verification at that time we submitted all the information required. Now that school has started and we have not gotten any word on any Financial Aid, the school is now saying that because my daughter lives with me now that I have to submit my income information. Is that right? I thought the FAFSA was completed using the previous years tax information at which time my daughter lived with and was supported by her father. I'm a little confused that almost 10 months after completing the FAFSA we still do not have a decision and now my information is needed. Is that "normal"? Thanks for any insight.

First of all, please talk to your daughter about staying on top of the communications she receives from the school. I imagine there were requests for information all along, and she did not pay attention. That is why this has not yet been resolved.

You are correct ... it is her father's info that should be on the FAFSA. There must be some reason they are asking for your info. My guess is that you and your daughter completed a verification worksheet, on which she indicated that her household consists of you & your daughter. It should have been completed using her father, not you. The school would otherwise have no idea she lives with you now, so they wouldn't be asking for your info. I am guessing she completed the form incorrectly and her file has been incomplete all along due to the conflicting information.

Your D needs to visit the financial aid office and explain that she lived with her dad the most ... give them a verification worksheet with her father's household information ... and let them straighten it out.
