Facebook profanity?

I heard that scholarship sponsors look over the Facebook profiles of potential winners. Is this rumor true? I recently put a post on my Facebook that contained the "b word" in it. However I wasn't using it to insult any specific persons. I don't have any other posts on facebook with any profanity other than that. Would this affect my chances of getting a scholarship if an official saw that on my Facebook?

Your page should be totally private anyway.

Yes, go through your photos/albums also and make sure they are set to private or "just friends." Delete photos that need to be deleted just to be safer. I believe you can also put your page on "hiatus' to be resurrected later, but read up as FB changes things daily. Checking all your apps, permissions, photos and security settings is something you should do at least once a year anyway.

The same goes for twitter accounts. As a test, Google yourself and see what shows up so you can put yourself in the perspective of an AdCom or a potential employer....and try to remove anything that might reflect negatively...

Why would you want the public to know everything you do on Facebook?

Everything.. EVERYTHING you put on FB in public will remain in public regardless of whether or not you move it to private.

There are numerous websites out there that keep track of every post and anything done publically remains that way.

Scary to say the least.

Regardless of your privacy settings you never know who is reading your Facebook page. More times than I can count I've gone to my computer and found my browser open to the FB page of one of my kids or one of their friends. From there I could read the posts of any of the people they've friended.

Some advice: Never put anything on FB, or the web in general, that you wouldn't want to see splashed across the front page of your home town newspaper.

Absolutely, 100% true. Yes, they do (and will) look at your facebook page.

Watch your Twitter activity as well! If your Twitter account is not protected, anyone can easily view your Twitter posts when your name is simply Googled.
I have recently discovered that many Twitter obsessed teens are unaware off this vulnerability.

Needless to say, it is not advisable to publicly post your instant in head out of mouth musings, especially those that are offensive or hurtful to others.

Twitter is the new bathroom wall on which to write something vicious about someone. Back in the old days, a nasty comment on a wall could be erased or painted over.
Today, Twitter posts are forever.
