Yes it did, thank you. How does being need-blind help, though? I understand that colleges will try to accept those who don't need aid, but if they grant LOANS then what's the big deal, since students are going to have to pay them back anyways? And also, financial aid must be merit-based then, right? Whereas Loans are given to everybody if they need any form of aid..?

What are top schools like HYP like in terms of international students and Fin.aid/ Loans/ Scholarships..?

Well if a school is need-blind, then they dont really care if youre rich enough to pay to go to there, and most need-blind schools (HYP, MIT, Dartmouth etc) meet 100% demonstrated need. But if a school is need-aware, they might reject you even if you've got great stats because you're considered to be a financial burden?

And yeah the bit about loans suck, becuase loans are usually part of most financial packages, except for Harvard, Columbia and Princeton which offer loan free financial aid. Others I'm not positive about. And the schools in the Ivy League and other top schools offer need-based aid (based on your, well needs), while other schools offer merit-aid (based on your ec's, test scores etc). I dont know much about merit-based scholarships since the schools I'm considering are offer need-based financial aid.

Is it possible that I'll get accepted to some place and then start talking about aid?

For example:

Brown: Hey, we like you and you can come but we won't give you all the money.
Me: Okay, I'll take a loan then and kill my family's financial status but whatever, it's Brown.

or will it be like:

Brown: We like you, but you want aid, so that'd be a REJECT.
Me: I don't want aid then, ACCEPT ME!!!!
Brown: Sorry, too late. Bye.

HELP.

I need a second opinion. My dad wants to put different figures in the 'how much do you plan to contribute?' space. E.g. put (hypothetically) 1000$ if a school is need-blind and 15000$ if it's need-aware. That's not really cheating, cause the income will remain the same anyway. The question is will need-blind schools continue their totally need-blind policy with the whole crisis thing? Nobody wants to go broke so...should I listen to my dad?

I'm a student from South Africa. My SATs are not out yet but should be above 2200. I'm involved in lots of activities and I'm one of the top students in my province, but lack leadership positions. What are my chances of getting into a good college with financial aid? What should I do to improve my chances?

I'm an international student. Is it easier to get into Brandeis or Williams with financial aid if I apply ED?

With Williams, Bowdoin, Middlesbury... and similar schools complete 100% demonstrated need. (But they are not need-blind) So, the admission decision will be affected with your demonstrated need!

Well, Williams is need-blind toward international applicants. Middlebury used to offer very generous financial aid, but they have changed their policy now (at least for this year) in the wake of the financial crisis. They will be substantially reducing their financial aid budget for incoming international freshmans. So, I guess, this year not many international students will get fin aid from Mid.

@ julienyu : Again, Brandeis is suffering financially this year because of a reduced endowment and lack of donations. In fact, it has decided to close down its acclaimed museum and will be increasing the class size substantially to increase its revenue. So, if you are someone who will be paying the full cost of attendance, Brandeis is a good option even if your stats are slightly average for them. (They might accept you for the money.) As I have said, Williams is need-blind, so your aid status will not hinder your chances, but Williams is much much more competitive than Brandeis. Therefore, getting into either one of them with aid will be extremely difficult, unless, of course, you have stellar stats, amazing essays etc.

I think Brandeis defers international ED applicants who seek substantial aid. So, if you want to apply ed, apply someone where they wont at least defer you only for the aid. I think Williams is a better option for ed than Brandeis.
