University of Alabama in Huntsville

Full Tuition for four years (No additional application required)

Full Tuition is guaranteed if you have SAT > 1360 (i.e. the combined score of reading and math) and GPA > 3.75 (on 4.0 scale).

Extra scholarships offered through seprate scholarship application! (make sure you meet the priority deadline - december)

Welcome to UAH!

Awesome things about this university:-

1) Its a research intensive university especially in Engineering and Science. [ Last year, spent $65 million on research alone]

2) Its situated near and has a lot of collaborations with the world's fourth largest and US's second largest research park - Cummings Research park.

3) Its a 10 minute drive from NASA Space flight center where you can work and train as a co-operative student if you're a student of UAH. [It has an accredited co-operative program that only a 13 other universities in the US have]

4) It is an equal opportunity institution [ This means you're treated the same no matter what; of course with the exception that you'll have to pay double the tuition if you're out of Alabama because you don't pay taxes to the state]

5) Its "A Best Southeastern College" according to princeton review.

6) 92% of the faculty hold PhDs and the faculty to student ratio is 1:16.

7) It is situated in a beautiful, medium-sized city which is known to be a great fit for professionals.

8) Its got free Wi-Fi access in most buildings and offers free, unlimited, high-speed internet access to the residence halls.

9) Gives the option of having private rooms for the incoming freshmen.

10) Has very flexible programs (well, it does so for physics; for which I've been admitted) and has minimum no. of required courses thus allowing the students to construct the entire course according to their interest.

11) Beware though, its not the place for you if you're looking for partying or stuff. It is however, the place for you if you're nerdy.

I got a 60% scholarship for a SAT score of 1260 (out of 1600) and a GPA of 4.0 on the 4.0 scale.

I'll be writing the SAT again this month and will hopefully be getting a full tuition. And I'll be showered upon with extra scholarship as I've also applied for the departmental scholarship through the separate application. And guess what? I'm an international student and there's no special rules or prejudice against me (at least in the application/selection process)!

Surely, UAH is a hidden gem!

Cheers!

I got a full tuition scholarship to Temple University. I have a 4.0 with a 2060 SAT (730 Verbal, 700 Writing, 640 Math). It's a pretty nice university, although I'm going for musical theater. They have a good honors college, too.

I'm not sure what the actual name of the scholarship is. I think it's something like being named a Temple Scholar or something.

Sounds well and good, BUTTTT, my dd got in to BU, she is hispanic and 4.0 and we are upper middle class in california; she did FAFSA and Profile. She got 8k in LOANS. No BU for her. Has applied for 20 scholarships. Not a one did she receive. We just got a rejection letter today from McDonalds/Hacer program. They originally said that this was a merit scholarship. Letter said our "income"
didn't qualify her. Don't these people know what "merit" means?

Aunt Bea -- I think something was screwy with BU this year: my D also had the stats for their "merit" awards as advertised on their site and we have a very high EFC. What happens? They give her 8K in NEED-BASED aid (??!!) but no merit. BU was not really in the running after she got into her more preferred schools.

Do UCs give merit scholarships to OOS students? Specifically UC Santa Cruz, if it varies from UC to UC. If they do, how much might they give? I couldn't really find anything online.

Santa Clara:

Provost Scholarship

This merit-based award provides a 50 percent tuition scholarship to up to freshman students who are admitted with distinction and have assumed leadership roles in their schools and their communities. All Provost Scholars are notified at the time of admission. This scholarship is renewable for up to four years, but must be coordinated with any need-based state or federal aid received. NOTE: If other Santa Clara University funds are offered, all funds must coordinate to not exceed the value of half-tuition.

Dean's Scholarship

The Dean's Scholarship (Arts and Sciences, Business, and Engineering) is a merit-based award to freshmen who are admitted with distinction. Recipients are selected during the admission process. The amount of individual awards varies based on the number of recipients and available funds. The Dean's Scholarship is renewable for up to four years, but must be coordinated with any need-based state and federal aid received. In addition, the Dean's Scholarship is a fixed amount and is not indexed to changes in tuition; therefore, the scholarship will not increase annually. Students must maintain good academic status in order to retain this award.

Thomas J. and Arlene Bannan Merit Scholarship

The Thomas J. and Arlene Bannan Merit Scholarship is awarded to a limited number of students who have demonstrated high academic achievement and exemplify the best traditions of Santa Clara University in terms of leadership, integrity, and community service. Awards can range from $1,000 to full tuition. Recipients are selected during the admissions process and there is no separate application.

More awards and more info at their web site.

I agree! I wish I had looked at, and been aware, of merit aid before we began this process for our D. Yes, you want to find a "good fit" for your kid, but, it isn't a bad strategy to have a least two schools on your list that might offer you some merit money. It helps to focus final decisions and forces students (coming from families that don't qualify for any financial aid) to really look at the value received from attending a "highly selective" schools.

I was wondering if there are scholarships out there for Juniors in Highschool that want to get an early start in the scholarship application process. Also, does anyone know the criteria to get into UVA

I'm actually disappointed in this thread. There are many schools out there that give wonderful aid, but it seems that the focus is "Top 20" or "Top 50" or "Top 100."

Missouri Southern State University
Evans Scholarship
Awarded to students in the Honors Program
Covers tuition, textbook rental, activity fees
ACT 28 or better
Students with ACT of 31 or better receive room and board also.
Eligibility
Scholarships

It's a "3rd tier" school, but I have loved the 4 years I spent here. Oh, and it's available to international students also.
