oooo >>> ohhh . There's a lot of difference between your country and mine. America has its GDP and reserves in trillions of dollars, while Pakistan had its annual budget of only 16 bn US $. I am not trying to be rude, but all I want to say that Pakistani government cant even support its own students and private univsersities here dont get much endownments. Look at America, private and state universities are dancing in money. I will give u an example, Harvard Universities endownment funds (last around 40 bn US $) are 3 times the total exports of Pakistan. Now you can imagine how poor we are.
And from what I have researched many universities give aid to international students, its not so uncommon as you think. <<<<


first of all, Harvard (and other ivies) are exceptions, most American universities are not "swimming in money" - especially most of the state schools and lesser well-known privates. Where did you get that idea from. Most universities have rather small endowments, and certainly not enough to fund all that they would want them to fund.

I'm not saying that there aren't any uni's that give aid to international students, but as a proportion to those who won't, the number is small. Again, univs in the USA have a hard enough time providing financial aid to American residents, much less provide for the world. I don't know which univs provide such foreign aid, but perhaps its for students who are majoring in some unique or specialty majors that need more students. (Grad school may be a totally different issue since those students are often used to T/A.)

You say that your country is poor. Well, there are about another 100+ poor countries in the world, so the US can't afford to provide college educations for the millions who come from "poor countries."

I did not say that USA should start giving education to every poor guy on earth. All I wanted to say was that Pakistan cannot even pay for its own students, how do u expect it to pay for any foriegn students ? And you are right in the sense that endownments are very low for many universities in America, but I gave the example of Harvard just to give you a general idea. Sorry if I was too rude to u, but I didnt meant to be rude. All I want to do is escape from this ****ty Pakistan, where bomb blasts go off everyday. I wish I could go to Baghdad University, because Iraq is now a more safer place than Pakistan.

@ oooooassi: Apply for small liberal art colleges. A lot of them offers need- based FA. Based on my experience and my friends', you totally have chance (If you are very good as you said ).

Your point was that Pakistan cannot pay for its own students.... well the other 100+ poor countries in the world can't pay for their poor students either (that is why I made the point that the US cannot provide educations for the world's poor - THEY ALL come from countries that can't afford to educate THEM.

Well, when one presents "a general idea," one shouldn't be presenting the MOST UNUSUAL and EXTREME example - which is Harvard and it's mega-endowment. If you want to give a "general idea" then present an example of a college whose endowment represents the TYPICAL college. No one get a "general idea" when the example presented is an extreme one.

I'm sorry that you live in a poor country. I'm sorry that it isn't safe. I'm sorry that Middle Eastern countries don't do more THEMSELVES to make sure that their countries aren't overrun with terrorists. I'm sorry that Middle Eastern countries don't cooperate MORE with the USA to get rid of terrorists, but that's where we are. We are where we are because Middle Eastern countries have harbored terrorists and have not done enough to make their own countries and the rest of the world safe from their own extremist citizens.

The USA has to spend gazillions of dollars fighting Middle Eastern extremists, isn't that enough for you? No. Now you want our country to provide a discounted or free education for you. Enough is enough. Go ask some rich Middle Eastern country to finance your education. It's a "drop in the oil barrel bucket" for them.

If some PRIVATE college wants to pay for your education without using any gov't funds, then they are welcome to do so. But to expect it because your country is poor, is ridiculous.

Both Rutgers and The College of New Jersey offer merit scholarship to NJ state residents.

Its a sliding scale based on class rank and SATor ACT scores -range is from $21,400 (Presidential Scholarship- basically a full ride) to $7500

First of all, I want to point out I am a transfer student from a community college going to UC Davis next year. I received an e-mail during November informing me that I am eligible for the Regents Scholarship, a merit-based scholarship which grants a LOT of money to me... so I was pretty excited. The thing is I found the e-mail in my spam folder and forgot to unmark it as spam after I read it so it was deleted on its own. Now I have limited information on how to go about applying. I know transfer students NEED a letter of recommendation which is why I sent a LoR request over 2 weeks ago to my chemistry professor through the Davis website specifically for the regents scholarship for Davis. He hasn't responded to any of my e-mails since and I don't know how to go about this. Since the deadline is January 2, 2009 for the Regents scholarship, I am getting very nervous. I guess my question is, is there any chance the teacher responds directly to the request from the website? Or if I have not received anything from him directly to me, does that mean he hasn't done it yet? Who turns it in? And where is the actual application??
