Is your EFC below $3850? That would qualify you for some major pell grant aid, that is the only indication they use.

I filled out the FAFSA. My brother didn't get the Pell Grant when we did it for him 2 years ago. So if I don't qualify, then it's probably a waste of time to fill out the scholarship, right?

to confucius, I would assume you won't be able to do that. but call them to make sure. you don't want to be disqualified after all that effort.

and don't worry about the school ranking.

I have a friend who graded GMS essays with the APIA (Asian Pacific Islander Association) last year. I asked her this:

On the essays, are they looking for proper essays - with intro, body, conclusion - or do they just want me to answer the prompt? Am I allowed to reuse some essays I've sent to colleges, or will colleges see this application?

And she told me this:

Your main goal is to address the prompt no matter how short or long your response may be. As long as you fully answer the question there is no need for the formal intro, body, and conclusion. Thinking back on when I had to answer these endless questions, I kept reminding myself that these readers are going to be looking at so many of these. My best advice for these prompts is to be interesting, yet concise.

As for recycling essays....definitely do it! Colleges will not be reviewing these applications, just readers selected by APIA.

Another tidbit...all readers are Asian and have some sort of leadership role in their own communities! They want to hear/read about anything that has to do with how being Asian and a leader has influenced EVERY area of your life. They eat this stuff up....along with community service.

Hope this helps you guys; I'm not done with mine yet!

I couldn't agree with Grapes more about what GMS is looking for in term of essays.

And Cindyay, each essay can be up to 7800 characters long.

"do we need to finish the fafsa for this scholarship?"

You need to file FAFSA for you college, Gates will only ask for your Student Aid Report (SAR) of the FAFSA during the second round of the competition in mid-April after you have gotten into college.
