Can I apply for scholarships and/or grants before I am accepted into any college?

I will be a high school senior in the fall and will be apply for college in august/september. Can I apply for scholarships or grants right now through sites like fastweb.com even though I havent gotten into college yet?

Yes there are awards specifically for high school students who have not yet applied or become accepted at any college. Sometimes, they will require you to be accepted before you can receive the funds, but they will hold it for a specified amount of time until then. Make sure you pay attention to these details and you will find some you can apply for. I suggest using multiple search engines and focusing your efforts on local, state, and major-based awards (they have less competition!)

This summer is the best time to begin researching scholarships on sites such as fastweb and surfing the web for scholarships specific to your major and interests. There are many that you can start working on now. Spend some time working on a really good essay (about 500 words) that gives your goals and plans for your future as many ask for something along that line. My son used the same essay (with a little change here and there) for several scholarships. Sometimes they wanted it reduced to 300 words. Also make a comprehensive list of all your ECs, volunteer work and awards...this will be needed over and over.

Get yourself organized as to due dates and requirements for each scholarship...you can use a binder or folders, whatever works for you.

Good luck!
