Gates Millennium questions

I am thinking of applying for Gates. my only question is that:

I am Asian-Chinese. Am I even qualified? I don't want to ask the Gates foundation because it seems like such a lame question, but I would like to know for sure. In a way, I know asians are minorties, but on the form it says "Asian Pacific Islanders"....and I am not a pacific islanders

really appreciate it if someone would clarify this

thanks!

I got a question. I know we need a recommender and nominator. My counselor has agreed to be my nominator but he wants to do it online. Am I the person that's supposed to register him online? or is he the one? When I register for nominator, it asks for username and password so I don't know

Your counselor is the one who registers online for his part of the application (in this case, the nominator's section). The information he needs in order to register is your full legal name and social security number; this must match the information on your nominee application. While your counselor wants to apply online, you are not required to apply online (although I would strongly suggest that). Same goes for your nominator. I would suggest having different people for your recommender and nominator so the GMS sees your well-roundedness.

Yes, you can apply online and have your recommender and nominator complete their sections by mail. Or vice versa. As long as each section has your full legal name and SSN, either online or mail is fine. Do keep in mind the different deadlines though: December 31 for mail and January 11 for online. Make sure each section is completed by their deadlines.

Well, when I was a high school senior, I went all out for scholarships and ended up applying for over 75. I had accounts on not only FastWeb but scholarships .com, ThomsonPetersons, CollegeBoard, and many more. I did word-specific searches on Google for scholarships. I checked in with my counselors and the career center at school. I went to other schools' websites to see what scholarships they were publicizing. Basically, if there was a scholarship out there, I wanted to find it, and this kind of mindset helped me find as many as I did.

Yes, I definitely do think you can win those scholarships, perhaps not all of them (I certainly didn't), but at least a few. You don't need a 4.0 or an ACT/SAT test score that's off the charts to win scholarships. I didn't have either and still managed to do well. I focused on showing my leadership in extracurriculars and volunteer service. Anyway, I sent you a longer PM with more tips. =P

I ended up winning 18 scholarships, 8 of which were on the national level. Most of them were from my senior year when I applied for about 60 and won 14.
