still unconfirmed...God, this is crazy.

And from what I have heard, 60,000 Applications were submitted on the 31st of December alone. Thats a HUGEEEEEEEEEEEE jump from last year's total of 11,000.

Good luck everyone.

After I read the post by electrequiem about the 60,000, DD called gates and the woman she spoke with verified that number!

I'm no math genius, but 1000/60,000 = 1.6%...You have five times the chance to get into Harvard than winning the Gates...Cheerful thought ain't it?

that's 1000/60,000 PLUS the 23232332 more submissions that was sent before Jan 11.

.... Gosh, I wish I was born one year earlier so I could graduated with the class of 2007. we got it bad (c/o 08)!

is there any chance that they might give the award to MORE kids this year? Maybe instead of a 1000 Gates Scholars, maybe they decide to give the scholarship to 2500?

Yeah, we sure did get screwed over this year. But I agree with Mika, we got this far, and we're as deserving as anyone else out there. We have to keep hoping. If it doesn't work out, it doesn't work out, but we gave it a good go, no?

60,000. That is so heartbreaking. It's not just harder to get into schools now, but harder to win scholarships so we can afford to go to those schools.

Gah. I'm with you guys, though--my perseverance will not fade.

Gluck everyone!
