| kimfred, your son is going to excel wherever he goes, and you and your husband are doing all the right things. You are being supportive in every way - financially ($10,000 is great!) and emotionally (your support and encouragement got him where he is) and passing on important financial lessons about making tough choices (staying out of deep debt is so important!). Roger_Dooley made some great suggestions. In addition, your son might contact the department directly to explain his situation and express his great desire to attend and ask about paid research assistant jobs. He could look into the possibility of being an RA as a junior and senior (maybe even a sophomre) - many of them get reduced or free dorms and that would cut down on expenses significantly. GOOD LUCK! |

| Thanks Roger Dooley! I've read your posts before and have found them valuable. Son has contacted school, waiting to hear back, have tried some of the others and some good ideas to try. Thanks so much. |

| Alamemom,
Thanks for you suggestions, the RA is a good one. Son had looked on that jobs online, went to work study first, then to others after October but don't believe RA is a work study job so he may have a chance at that in later years. I have suggested he contact the research program and see if there are opportunities specifically thru them.
Thanks All! Hard decisions for many of us in the next few weeks. |

| I'm going to feel so guilty and depressed if I'm not admitted to either Princeton or Columbia.
My parents are going to be screwed =/ |

| I had kind of icky aid from Northeastern too- A lot of people with lower stats than me got more, and I have an EFC of 0... And they gave me about 15,000- a little less than half of that is in loans. Luckily, I had better luck with my other schools....
Any Juniors reading this: If you have a lot of need, don't rely on schools that will give you a lot of merit aid- you probably still will need more and schools that give tons of merit aid usually don't meet a high percentage of need. Apply to schools that meet 100% of need- they require more documents, but they're fabulous! |

| "Is Duke generous in giving financial aid?"
What I heard is -Duke provides 2/3 tuition for faculties' admitted kids.It looks Duke is generous if you just read the data. However, if you are insiders, you'll know middle-income over-achievers have little chance to get help from school. |

| MomOf3Stars, I hope you are one of the lucky ones who will get a good FA package from NYU. I literally started crying when I saw my son's paper last year. 2 different 15K scholarships. I called the FA dept and made them double check. My EFC was just under 12K for this year and with the Perkins and Stafford loans, that is about what I'm paying.
Yes, NYU does give good scholarships out, not to everyone, but I count my blessings (and my pennies) every day. |

| I was accepted to Duke, but they only offered me $5,800 in aid of which half are loans and the other half work-study. They say that my total cost will be $51,000! My family definitely cannot afford that. |

| University of Illinois was all loans. And a very large majority of it was a PLUS loan. |

| Penn State. Boo hiss. My EFC was $4500 and we were offered NO need based aid, only loans. PLUS loans are my friend. |
