Hamburgler, you can apply as a freshman. Thats what I did last year and I ended up as an alternate, and I'm planning on reapplying this fall. Though it opens in August, the final materials aren't due until December, and by then you'll have your first semesters grades, and I think you have some time to send in a transcript. Mine didn't get received by them until about 3 weeks after the application closed.

My high school senior wants to apply for this, but it says high school seniors cannot apply so what is he supposed to do? Finanical aid is a huge factor, so is he supposed to start attending college just anywhere.. and then apply?

| your high school senior
As far as I know Hight School seniors are allowed to apply --- but I would have to check to make sure. In any event, I would assume that any college experience (or rather an outstanding early college performance) would be very helpful. Even if your college senior applies and is not accepted the first time, I would recommend that he/she reapply the following year --- but it would be beneficial if he/she would get some research experience over that period. For example --- one can ask some of their college professors if they would have some research project for them (even something small for the summer).
Best of Luck

Hey I curious about what your "stats" are. I am going to apply for the SMART scholarship. I am full time during my last semester under my associate degree at a local college at the moment. I have a current GPA of 3.6 but after this semester (6 classes/16 credits) I should have 3.8+
Now, I have absolutely ZERO school involvement/awards/sports/clubs/etc. Nor do I have any research experience. BUT, I emailed the SMART team and they said that as long as I meet the basic eligibility requirements, I should apply.
So, what are your stats (grades/research experience etc.)?

I am a sophomore at Wright State pursuing a BS in Computer Science. I don't have any research experience due to my full class and work schedule. I was an alternate last year and am applying again this year. I really don't think a lack of research experience will hurt much, as long as you show interest in pursuing research and working for the DoD. Hopefully this year will end in a different result for me!

I'm in the same exact situation as mcrawfo and awgreen - I'm a sophomore that's studying Animal Science and I applied last year without having much research experience due to lack of time, got chosen as an alternate, and now I'm reapplying. Good luck to everyone who's applying this year!

| If you're pre-med, then no. If you're interested in BME research, then yes.

| Average GPA for 2009 was 3.73. There's some discussion on raising the minimum required to 3.5. Research experience is a definite plus, however, they're also looking for leadership ability.
If you meet the minimum requirements, you are then assignment a point score. For 2009, I believe that the top half were then passed on to the services. I'd imagine that it will be less this year though, given the number of expected applicants.
