I got it in California, but I don't understand how you receive your funds. I've been searching the California website but haven't had any luck. Anyone know how?

Mesquite_girl24: Thank you so much!

I hope you get it as well. I've seen your stats on some other boards, and your stats are a lot more impressive than mine!

Son received this -- you get a check each year which you then sign over to the college/university.

Not guaranteed. The scholarship is dependent on federal funding which must be renewed annually by Congress. And it's "up to" $1,500/year, which I guess means the state agency can exercise discretion in determining how to distribute the funds each year. Also, recipients have to renew the scholarship every year. In our state, this requires a VofE letter from the registrar as well as a letter saying the recipient is in good academic standing... sent by a certain deadline.

This must vary by state. Our state agency sends the check directly to the college, and I believe it's actually two checks ($750 per semester).

azn4eyes00: They sent me a letter in the mail, but it said "All selected scholars should check the California Student Aid Commission's website for procedures to follow to receive their scholarship funds."

Robert C. Byrd

Hi!
I received notification yesterday via USPS. I got it!
There's nothing in the letter about whether the check comes to the recipient or the college. There is also nothing about whether there's any more paperwork to be signed.
Can anyone answer this for me?

Thanks in advance

We got an email. And all it did was list the university my d had specified as her school of choice. It was correct. Then we went to the Florida site that she'd signed up for her Bright Futures and originally checked the box saying she'd like to be considered for Byrd, assuming, of course, her HS nominated her, which it did. We then double checked on that site that everything had gone to Byrd, i.e. final transcripts and such, and they had. We checked her financial aid page for her university (UF), and entered the Byrd scholarship as a "new" scholarship she would be getting. We were told that the scholarship would automatically go into her account at the University. We are setting up with the financial aid account an automatic routing of extra funds into her bank account, as she will have more than enough between her three scholarships to cover tuition, and she'll be living off-campus, so she'll need those extra funds to apply towards her apartment rent. You should probably check with your financial aid dept. for your particular school to see how things are handled.
