This Dept. of Education budget document, dated 3/12/09 shows that it was funded. See pg. 17 under "Scholarships and Fellowships."

Quillpen-Thank you I'm sure that was tough to find! I called my state DOE, they said they were told to send in "provisional estimates" or some similar to the US DOE, so that is also encouraging.

Any word in Alabama

I was nominated, and I thought I had a really good chance of getting this.

ACT 35 SAT 2350, Valedictorian and great extracurriculars and references...

But I have heard nothing so far. Have any recipients been notified in Alabama?

Note to those receiving the Byrd Scholarship:
Freshman daughter from Texas attending CU Boulder was awarded the Byrd Scholarship.
In the fall it didn't pay until October. This Spring, it's just now being credited to her account.
Expect delays in the money's actually being credited to your student

I'm in Mississippi and I applied. There was no nomination process; my counselor just gave them out and we sent them ourselves.

@ JrProv1: They don't take into account anything other than your RAW GPA and SAT or ACT score

Each state sets its own criteria for how to award the scholarship. While some look strictly at GPA & SAT scores, others take more factors into consideration such as ECs, leadership, community service, recommendations, etc. Alabama, which the poster inquired about, falls into the second category.

JrProv1, the Alabama winners will be notified by May 7th, so there is still time. Evidently only the winners are contacted. This information can be found on page two of the following link:
http://alex.state.al.us/leadership/R...%20package.pdf

Good luck to all you applicants!

response to 2blue & azn4eyes00

azn4eyes00:

Alabama's application includes other items such as extracurriculars, community service, leadership, recommendations, etc. as stated by 2blue.

2blue:

The link you have given is for the 2008 application. There is another link for 2009, and that application coverpage states that the recipients will know by April 3rd.

BUT, there is still a delay in Washington communicating the funding amounts to each state, so it will be later before the recipients will be notified.

dang that sucks, I wish my state did that

My state (CA) just gives you a pure number: GPA/SAT score. Lol, so sucky

So basically all they see is my name and 4.0/2350 next to it.

nothing else. lame.

Here's a posting from June 6, 2005:

We called the Dept. of Education (who chooses) and the Georgia State Finance Commission (who administers). We were told announcements would be made in June (by GSFC) and in August (by DOE).

I found out today from my school that I am a recipient of the scholarship. It's $1500 per year, renewable for up to 4 years.

I live in Nevada.
