Is it possible to apply for private student loans or PLUS loans in the middle year?

Do PLUS or private student loans have to be applied for in the summer? This may be a really obvious answer to some, but we haven't needed to borrow money and won't until S' second quarter payment is due in his sophomore year. This would be in December.

I didn't know if you can apply for these loans at any point in the year.

Yes you can apply later in the year. Lots of people start school after the fall and even in the summer and are able to apply for financial aid, including loans.

And many people only take enough to cover the first semester and then apply for more loans for the second semester. I know a family that is doing that with Tufts. I guess because the interest starts accruing from the moment the loan is disbursed to the college - why take out money that isn't needed till probably December or January.
