I have a SAT target of around 1400 out of 1600. I currently have a score of 1740 out of 2400.
I know my GPA is letting me down. I would love to improve upon that but the thing is, my board exams are over and I don't have any examinations to take any more. The 3.25 GPA is also just an estimate. Our curriculum was a tough one as it was I.Sc. and not 10+2. For distinction, one must score 75% total and I had a 68% aggregrate in the final board exam. And now I have no option to improve that GPA.

My new scores are out. I have got a score of 2080 this time around with 750 in maths, 750 in writing and 580 in CR. I know that the low CR will hurt but can u guys recommend me some colleges please.

Hi, the problem is that virtually the only schools that provide free rides to internationals (or even full tuition) are ivies and similar.

The regional OU campuses are a bargain but the cost for an out of state student would FAR exceed $7000 a year. While the costs of tuition at the Ohio University regional campuses is $6000 a year...what about housing and board...? This student needs a place to live and food too.

Are there any schools in the OPs native country where he/she could go to college? Seems to me that $7000 per year isn't going to go very far in the United States. This student would be an OOS student everywhere with high costs of attendance at most (and especially when you add in room/board). Private schools also will be expensive.

The other thing to consider is that for admissions, most of the "lower tier" schools are NOT need blind for admissions purposes. That means the OPs ability to pay for their schooling WILL be considered when the application for admissions is being considered.

Even a community college will be costly...again...OOS tuition (reasonable by college standards) but then you have to add it room/board. This student can't commute from home!!

I read somewhere that student loans are much harder to get for int'ls without having an American co-signer. I guess the fear is that the int'l will return to his home country after his education and not re-pay the loan.


Also, since int'ls aren't eligible for federal loans of any sort, that would suggest the rates of any such loans would be higher.

Even with a budget of $10k, the cheapest colleges that I'm finding are about $30k per year. Those are some mid-tier and 3rd tier publics that charge about $18-20k for tuition and about $10k for everything else.

So, you're short $20k per year. Student loans of $80k would just be ridiculous. The repayment would be nearly 1,000 per month for 10 years.

An int'l can't just come and "wing it". To get a visa, an international must be able to demonstrate that all of their costs are covered.

Are there any other family members that can contribute to your education?

Unfortunately, no one else in my family can provide any more funds.

Aren't there any colleges providing good scholarships that I may be eligible for which would reduce my costs to the amount I can afford?

I heard momfromtexas had a strategy of finding colleges where the student is in the top of the applicant pool. Im not sure if this exists but if it does, can I have a link to the article please?

If you go to the int'l thread, you'll see which schools give scholarships to internationals. However, most of those scholarships are small - certainly not the $20k+ per year that you would need.

Since I've looked for schools for another int'l, I can tell you that's it's very hard to find schools for non-residents that cost under $31k per year.

On a recent thread, someone said that Christian Brothers U in Memphis is generous with scholarships to int'ls. I can't remember if the int'l has to major in eng'g or not. you might send an email to their scholarship office and ask what their scholarship policies are for int'ls.

Berea College does offer a lot of assistance for students. But you must be familiar with the college work study program. Every student has to be a part of the labor program where you will recieve a minimum pay depending on your class, the rest of the money goes toward your tuition. It is no different than going to a University and have an outside job (which at Berea you are not allowed to or even have time for another job) to help with your tuition. The institution at Berea is set up where it is almost impossible to have money or anything for that matter while you are in school because of its "simple living" way of life. The money you DO make from the labor program, usually you have to give back to the school for room and board fees, which varies per student. I know this because I am a Berea College student, now I am transfering because with a child on the way, I must be able to make progress fast, not have to wait until after my four years are over in Berea.

if you get up to a 1330, lsu (louisiana state university-baton rouge) will give you free tuition. Housing is $4600/year, and you will have books and food, but all of that should be manageable.
Scholarship Forms
It is called the golden oaks scholarship. LSU is a Tier 1 University. But it will require improving your SAT 130 points.
