Well I'm not applying for need based FA, so i was just wondering if i would be able to receive some merit based, hopefully

I have an 89.95/100 and am in the top 15% at my extremely competitive private high school on long island, i got a 28 on the ACT, and 1720 in the SAT, but i took the one last saturday and i thought i did amazing on it, so base it if i got scores say in the 2000s.

I wrote passionate essays, have good teachers recs, and put a lot of time and effort into my app. I have good EC's with leadership positions.

So anyway, down to business, the schools i am aplying to are:

Bentley University
Northeastern University
St Joe's (Philly)
U Del (applying before dec 1 for scholarship consideration)
U Richmond (applying before dec 15 for richmond scholars consideration)
Villanova

SO with all that said, which school would i receive the most money from, if any?

This is just my guess. You don't say how rigorous your class selection was and that is one of the most important measures for all these colleges. The other is GPA. For half the scores are important, for the other half very important.

Northeastern, about the 50%, no merit aid
Bentley the same
UDel, about 75% level, potential merit aid
Richmond same as NE
Nova, about 25% level, no merit aid

If you need merit aid, you need to look at several school sknown to give high merit awards to more than just a few "chosen" students.

Those highly competitive merit awards are like playing the lottery. Only apply to a few of those schools - those schools cannot be your financial safeties since there's only a small chance of getting a big competitive merit award from them.

You need to look at schools that automatically give merit money to kids with strong stats. Those are schools that are ranked lower than your list. There are some mid-ranked schools that give generous merit.


It sounds like you know you won't qualify for F/A (which are mostly subsidized student loans), and it sounds like your parents can't/won't pay their EFC.


Do you know how much your parents can pay each year for your education.

Talk to BOTH of your parents...get an amount from them (even if your parents are married, you need to talk to both of them. You don't want one parent promising an amount that the other parent insists is unaffordable - that sometimes happens ).

Once we know that, we won't be making stabs in the dark...we'll be working with real numbers and be looking for real solutions.

My gut is telling me that you need a lot of merit money...so just let us know.


BTW...what will be your likely major?

I'm taking the most rigorous course load available, and my major will be business/economics.

Does anyone have a good suggestion that has good/business econ that would be likely to give me some money

Some of the SUNYs like Albany might be good. Albany has a number of scholarships and your stats are toward the top of the group.

I was really looking more for private schools, plus i gotta get outta new york, so any schools here are no good for me.

Private schools because of the size? If that is true, look at smaller state systems or the state liberal arts colleges. If size is not an issue look at Indiana, University of Minnesota, Michigan State and some of the other state systems that have business programs. Look in the Midwest, South, West. Their websites should tell you if there are automatic finacial aid for OSS students and what the requirements are.

if you get your sat in the 2000s, i think that you have a chance to get merit aid from bentley. i know someone who had a 1960 sat and about the same gpa and got some merit aid, although not a whole lot.

This may seem like a shocking suggestion to someone from NY....LOL...but you said that you need a lot of money....and you want a good business school

Before you think...oh, no, not the south...Let me tell you. We are from California. I went to UCI; my husband went to Purdue (undergrad) and Iowa (grad school). We are able to recognize a good school when we see one.

Both of our kids go to Alabama. Both love it there. The school is gorgeous. I don't know if you're a male or female, but I must say the kids on campus are quite good looking! Another plus for those looking for some social life... LOL.. A college book that grades the "good looks" of students on various campuses gave UA males an A...and the book gave UA females an A+ So, either way, good eye candy!

S1 got the NMF scholarship. S2 got the Presidential scholarship and the Engineering scholarship. They are both in the super nice honors dorms. S1 is in the Computer-Based Honors Program. They're both in the University Honors Program. My husband (an engineer who graduated Summa Cum Laude) is completely blown away by the level of academics that our kids are getting.

Because many UA students are the children of Alabama transplants (families whose high-tech companies transferred them to Alabama), and are students from all 50 states, the school isn't all that "southern" in feel. I rarely hear a southern accent on campus. Yes, there are some nice southern traditions - football is big here, and students are VERY friendly and will smile and acknowledge anyone on campus - even parents like me

The profs are mostly all from the top schools...the Ivies, Stanford, Vandy, Duke, UMich, UVa, Berkeley, UCLA, etc.

I was concerned that our Catholic kids would seem odd on a southern campus. I was wrong; there is a big Catholic church right across the street. There are many Catholic, Jewish, Moslem, etc kids and profs on campus. A new Hillel is being built for the Jewish students. An atheist would also feel fine on the campus. All the typical college clubs are at UA - from liberal to moderate to conservative....even the so-called "controversial clubs" can be found at UA

The campus is gorgeous, and the weather is moderate during the school year. It is hot in the summer, but most kids aren't in class then.

I very much recommend visiting the campus. An out-of-state student who goes to UA recently posted on CC that... "UA is recruiting for the best and brightest students nationwide. For many students, it is the money that first interests us in Alabama, we visit, and then we get hooked."

Oh...and UA kind of has a good football team...you may have heard of it ...The Crimson Tide...currently #2 in the nation! Even if football isn't your thing, I must say the spirit is contagious on campus.

OK...Assuming that your SAT stats improve to the below stats for Math and Critical Reading..

Presidential Scholar
An out-of-state first-time freshman student who meets the December 1st scholarship priority deadline, has a 32-36 ACT or 1400-1600 (Math + CR) SAT score and at least a 3.5 cumulative GPA will be selected as a Presidential Scholar and will receive the value of out-of-state tuition for four years.

This scholarship is worth about $80,000 for an OOS student

UA Scholar
An out-of-state first time freshman student who meets the December 1st scholarship priority deadline, has a 30-31 ACT or 1330-1390 (Math + CR) SAT score and at least a 3.5 cumulative GPA will be selected as a UA Scholar and will receive 2/3 tuition for four years.

This scholarship is worth about $53,000 for an OOS student.

Unfortunately, if your ACT or SAT stats stay about the same as your past scores, then you could only get the below as an OOS student.

Collegiate Scholar
An out-of-state first-time freshman student who meets the December 1st scholarship priority deadline, has a 28-29 ACT or 1250-1320 (Math + CR) SAT score and at least a 3.5 cumulative GPA will be selected as a Collegiate Scholar and will receive $3,500 per year ($14,000 over four years).

BTW...for any other interested students...UA accepts your weighted GPA to figure scholarships. UA takes the highest GPA that is written on your HS transcript - which can include grades for PE, religion, electives, etc. So, if your weighted GPA is at least a 3.5 and you have the right stats, you can get a scholarship as long as you apply to the school and to scholarships by Dec 1.

For many with good stats, UA is an awesome choice...even if you just need a financial safety. BTW...the application process is super EZ...no essays.

Wow, thank you, ill definitely look into, but I'm a little bit weary because it is in the south and i am a big city guy and couldnt see myself anywhere else, but thanks a lot.
