university of south carolina

Hi,
I'm from Georgia, and I want to attend USC next year. It is a great school and has the best undergraduate international business program in the country, and since I most likely will be rejected by UGA, I want to attend USC. Which suits me perfectly. But the problem is that the tuition is 22k/year for out of state residents.

My GPA is 3.0
My SAT is 2100, math and reading 1400.
Class rank is bottom half.
My family income is 35k/ year
I'm east asian.
I was pretty involved, I was on debate, tutor, and student government.

Is there any way I can get some kind of financial aid to this college? I've looked on their website but my poor GPA doesn't qualify for most of them.

Being out of state it is very doubtful you'll get any FA. Financial aid at most state Us is reserved for state residents. Have you looked at some in-state colleges?

I think you must mean that your GPA won't qualify for merit scholarships.

GPA isn't used for financial aid...it's used for scholarships.

Is this USCarolina program listed in the Academic Common Market for Georgia residents? If not, then you're not likely going to get enough F/A to overcome the OOS costs. (BTW...I just checked, it's not listed)

Rarely can a state school provide enough F/A to compensate for OOS costs. Most state schools can't even provide enough F/A for in-state students.

Why are you so certain that you'll be rejected by UGa? Your GPA may be in the bottom 25%, but your SAT should be strong enough to compensate for that.

Does UGa state a minimum GPA for acceptance?

Is that your weighted GPA or unweighted?

Will your UGa tuition be paid for thru the state tuition plan?

BTW...are you sure that USCarolina has the #1 program?

I just checked and USC does participate in the Academic Common Market: Academic Common Market/Regional Contract Program
However, for the ACM to be applicable your home state must not have that program. The OP already knows that UGA does offer Int'l Business. And actually according to US News it is the #1 program for Int'l Business.

Your stats say that you're smart but that you had some problems with execution. It may be that low family income contributed to that. Are you taking a shot in Georgia? Are you considering other majors besides international business?

USC has some very favorable scholarships for high performing out of state students. The McNair is a full cost scholarship and is highly competitive. BUT the school also has the Cooper Scholarship and the McKissick Scholarships at $4000 and $2000 per year annually...BUT they also reduce the cost of tuition to the instate tuition rate. Your SAT scores might put you in the running for the McKissick...your GPA is a bit on the lower side for their merit awards.

But hey...you never know unless you apply.

thumper1, I checked out the McNair scholarship and the website states that it's only for 15K per year renewable with 3.0 GPA. Do you know if OOS gets instate tuition and the scholarship then covers tuition?

I did some checking for UGa and GT...

Your GPA is very likely too low for either school right now. Both schools have mid-range students with high GPAs (well over 3.5) Many of their students have GPAs of 4.0+

I suggest that you go to an in-state lower ranked school, then transfer to UGa for your junior and senior year. Typically, "business school" begins during the 3rd year anyway.

Will you get your tuition paid by Georgia lottery program? Will you also qualify for fed grants? If so, then that really is the best option for you.

Which lower ranked Georgia publics would you consider attending for 2 years?

You most definitely could qualify for some really good scholarships at USC. They have some awesome oos scholarships and the ones that are not full tuition also include in-state tuition.
Apply early, like now. Look online for the scholarships and the applications. Get going though!
Also - check out the USC forum. they usually have a lot of activity on their scholarships.
scroll down for out of state scholarships - some require a separate application:

Has the OP said whether he'd have the Hope Scholarship available for him?

USC is again ranked #1 for international business, however it is a difficult program to gain admission to even once you are accepted at the university. The OP should look at the specific requirements and stats for that program rather than the university at large.

^^^

Good point! It won't do the OP much good to get accepted to USCarollina if he doesn't get accepted into the business program he desires. What are the qualifications to get accepted into the business program?

That said...the OP needs to understand that a person doesn't have to go to the #1 school in order to get a great education in international business. Some of the factors that go into determining these rankings are rather meaningless in regards to education itself.

Wow ..I just reread my post and it sounded really negative...I apologise to the OP. I didn't mean to imply that you won't get in, just that I have heard that it is difficult and that you should do some digging for info with regards to admission to the program.
I do wish you luck - wherever you decide to apply!

How about

Georgia Southern U 25% of the students are in some kind of business major -

Georgia State U 32% are in a business major

Kennesaw State U 27% in a business major

North Georgia College and State U 24% in a business major

University of West Georgia 26% in a business major

Valdosta State U 17% in a business major

The fact that these schools have rather large business schools suggests to me that they would have a good program.

Don't any of these schools have a good international business program??

Anyone know???

Maybe the OP can make a new thread and copy/paste the above list and ask if anyone knows if any these Georgia public U's have a good/strong International Business Program.
