If your parents are divorced, and your mom has custody, only her financial information is necessary for the FAFSA. Your dad's would be necessary for the CSS Profile.

I don't know what the case is for separated-but-not-divorced parents. Swimcatsmom and some of the other experts here should know. Maybe it's time for your mom to finally divorce the guy?

What I do know, is that if your dad is a US citizen or legal permanent resident, he should be filing US federal tax returns every single year while he is living abroad. Chances are that he wouldn't owe any taxes, but he should be doing the paperwork.

non-custodial parents aren't required for FAFSA, but I think they are required for Profile (unless they've always been "absent" and can't be located).

Of the approximately 260 colleges that require the Profile, approximately 110 require the non-custodial form to be filled out, i.e. less than half. My sons have researched about 30 Profile schools between the 2 of them and only 1 so far requires the non-custodial form to be filled out.

Yes, but keep in mind that most schools that don't require Profile don't meet need. The schools that offer the best need based financial aid almost all require it.

So, if a kid needs a lot of aid, then he needs to apply to a school that gives generous aid that meets need....and those tend to be the ones that need the NCP's income info.


Dnerd, you don't need your dad's info for FAFSA, but you probably need to avoid schools that require CSS Profile, since you need a lot of aid. Since you're a likely NAchievement, you do have some good choices. BTW...did you get more waivers from school?

Ah, sorry I don't know what the term is for when they were never married in the first place.. >_>

Oh and yeah I finished my UA app and got a copy of my SAT waiver, so I just have to send that in tomorrow.

My list (in order of preference):

(I have the Florida Bright Futures scholarship which pays for +95% of tuition)
Florida State University
University of Alabama
University of Florida - They don't offer my major, Management Information Systems, but I'd be willing to take Information Systems as an undergrad and transfer later on.
Georgia Tech
