| Comparison of BFA and BM Tracks Here is how the BM and BFA degrees compare at FSU:
Both BFA & BM Tracks Require:
Private Voice – 8 semesters
MT Workshop – 4 semesters
Movement – 3 semesters
Voice Techniques – 1 semester
Stage Makeup – 1 semester
Here is where the degrees differ:
MUSIC COURSES
*Music Theory – 2 semesters for BFA’s, 4 semesters for BM’s
*Sightsinging – 2 semesters for BFA’s, 4 semesters for BM’s
*Piano – 1 semester (or until competency is demonstrated) for BFA’s, 4 semesters for BM’s
*Music Ensemble – 0 for BFA’s, 2 semesters for BM’s
*Conducting – 0 for BFA’s, 1 semester for BM’s
*Intro to Technology in Music – 0 for BFA’s, 1 semester for BM’s
*1st Year Experience in Music – 0 for BFA’s, 1 semester for BM’s
*Music History – 0 for BFA’s, 2 semesters for BM’s
*World Music Cultures - ) for BFA’s, 1 semester for BM’s
* MT Repertoire – 0 for BFA’s (though repertoire is certainly covered in private voice lessons and in vocal coaching), 4 semesters for BM’s
*Senior Recital is required for BM’s and not for BFA’s, though sometimes BFA’s do perform a senior voice recital
DANCE – BFA’s take 6 classes for a minimum of 12 hours (competency must be demonstrated). BM’s take 3 classes for a minimum or 6 hours (competency must be demonstrated). At FSU students tend not to be accepted into the BFA program unless the School of Theatre MT co-chair, Kate Gelabert, feels that they have potential as dancers. Students can be accepted into the BM track with less dance skill.
THEATRE COURSES
*Acting – 5 semesters for BFA’s, 2 semesters for BM’s
*Vocal Coaching – 2 semesters for BFA’s, 0 for BM’s (though some of the same material is covered in MT Repertoire)
*Introduction to Theatre – 1 semester for BFA’s, 0 for BM’s
*Theatre History – 1 semester for BFA’s, 0 for BM’s
*Music Theatre History – 2 semesters for BFA’s, 1 semester for BM’s
*Technical Theatre & Labs – 4 semesters for BFA’s, 0 for BM’s
*Directing – 1 semester for BFA’s, 0 for BM’s
*Play Analysis – 1 semester for BFA’s, 0 for BM’s
BFA’s may take Dialects, additional Acting classes, and Senior Project as electives. (I believe that performing a senior voice recital counts as a senior project in the School of Theatre.) |

| check other FSU threads Hey Brian -
Please check the other other FSU threads - there are already several - even two current ones on the second page of this Musical Theater forum.
I really don't mean to come on like the "thread police" but if people don't check existing threads before starting new ones, the information will get so fragmented, no one will benefit. Can we try?
Thanks so much! |

| COLLEGE MOM:
Is there a way to put a note at the top under the FAQ link reminding posters to check the back pages for the list of topics before starting a new thread?
I certainly agree with my almost name sake theatermom. |

| Thank you TheaterMom and NYTheaterMom. I have now merged two threads on FSU (the new one today with the most recent one).
As well, I took your suggestion to put a note at the top of this forum that explains what to do if new to the forum, as well as starting new threads. My entire post about this does not show up but there is a link to read my entire message at the top.
Hope this helps. Good idea.

| Mainstage2456,
Please take a look at the thread called Florida State's MT program. There is quite a bit of detailed information about the program there. If you still have questions after reading it I'll be happy to help you. My D just finished her freshmen year in the BFA MT program. |

| I have now merged this thread with yet another FSU thread (a total of three threads now merged) so that all the discussion on this school is together and not disjointed. What happens, however, when I merge threads, is that the posts from all the threads are put into chronological order. Please realize, then, that the "conversation" above might not flow as posts are inserted from other threads in order by date. But the main thing is that all the discussion on this school is now in this thread (or at least the discussions from the past several months).
If you are new to the forum, before starting a new topic, it is best to search to see if there is already a thread on the topic. This way, all the helpful people on here who have perhaps answered the same questions in the past, do not have to again. You can then find information you need, and then ask questions still not answered.
Thank you to all who are sharing their experiences and knowledge to help others.

| CollegeMom,
Thank you for honoring my request. I hope that having only one thread about Florida State will simplify things for those interested in the school. |

| Please Bring Up My Post for MTPapa.
If you look at post #16 on this thread you'll find a comparison of the BFA and BM MT tracks at FSU.
I would count FSU as a program that strives for a balance between acting, music, and dance classes. All MT students study music theory, piano, take 8 semesters of private voice, and take several semesters of actor training. All must also pass muster in dance. That said, the BFA students do get more of an acting emphasis in their training and the BM students get more of a music emphasis. |

| FSU Dorms I'd appreciate any information on the residence halls at FSU. Any to avoid at all costs and which would be the three or four best for an MT student?
Thanks |
