Navarre1,
I think that you misunderstand me. I am simply pointing out that obtaining a Florida university degree is cheap and that each student has a shared responsibility to pay for it.
I should not have personalized my point, but I simply wanted to add perspective to this discussion. No one should be angry when someone else has an easier time. Every life is unique and will face his/her own challenges. I admit that I was put off by the OP's complaint of having to pay $1200 over the course of four years. My message is simply this: with a tuition so cheap, $1200 should not be considered an unreasonable hardship.

I voted no... If I could have wrote something in, I would have voted HELL no. Tuition is increasing plenty as it is. 240-300 dollars is a lot of money for a college student.
As LightSpeed1 said, we pay more in fees than tuition... That's the truth. How about you eliminate fees and just charge us for what we want to use? I have a feeling it'd be a lot cheaper that way.

^^^^Going to a system where you paid for what you used might end up costing you a lot more. You have no idea how little you are paying for the services you use because others are helping to defray the costs.
FSU is very cheap and an excellent educational value. And, it will continue to be so for several more raises in fees to come.

etherdome, what youre saying is pretty ignorant. "You have no idea how little you are paying for the services you use because others are helping to defray the costs. "
they continuously raise fees every year. like matt said, its become an exorbitant amount. its not the answer

Florida state U's used to lump all fees under the heading "tuition." Because some locations wanted to charge more for some things than other locations, the state broke up the "tuition" into tuition and specific fees. There is NO university that will not have these expenses. And most other colleges and universities just lump everything under "tuition." The breakdown also occurred because of FL prepaid and bright futures.
They are NOT going to do away with these fees just because you don't use facilities. They may eventually return to just lumping everything under "tuition" because there is a lot of misunderstanding about fees. But these are fees that a student will pay to attend a university. Yes, tuition and fees are rising and it can be difficult in the economy. But tuition and fees in Florida remain very low. Heck, even though room and board seems high, you should see the cost for dorms and meal plans in other states: the fees at state U's for room is often DOUBLE and board is quite a bit more as well.

so your new argument is "well look at other states its about time we had higher costs"
who cares about other schools tuitions? this has nothing to do with tuitions. its about fees, and its not comparable to other out-of-state schools

It's about FSU competing nationally and that takes money. It is a worthy investment.

^^^^Well said.
Each individual has to decide whether a college education is worthwhile. If the cost of attending a very good university is too high and ultimately not worth the investment, then find another way to make your life. There are other, cheaper alternatives that may suit some career paths. If you find a suitable alternative, then make the jump.
A competitive university that provides the opportunities for students to compete worldwide requires a lot of money. Sometimes, the money is spent in a very visible way, such as new labs or additions to library collections or guest lecturers. But, more often, those costs are not visible ( liability insurance, infrastructure maintenance, labor costs, professors' stipends, conferences, and a litany of other expenses).
Compare the total cost of FSU to any other similar university. I think that you will find it to be a very reasonable deal. If, however, you can attain your career/life goals without the benefits that FSU offers, then, perhaps you are wasting your money in Tallahassee.
You have choices.

I believe part of the State Party's platform (the party currently in power) was to add televisions to the food court in the student union. That should really put us over the top in the rankings.

God, I love this whining. Get over it, if you don't want to pay then drop out and go to community college where you get basically school and nothing else.
Look FSU provides tons of stuff that "fees" pay for, lets break it down:
All the free student events (concerts, comedians, etc) all paid for by "fees"
Strozier is open 24/5 now
The leach center
etc....
I mean, I guess if you don't use any of this then yeah, it may suck for you, but then again, why wouldn't you use it?
And before someone brings a personal attack, I go to college full time, keep up my grades, bright futures doesn't cover everything so I have a full time job as well. You said that $300 is a lot for a college student, lets break it down, $300 per year is about $33 a month for the 9 months that we are in school (fall/spring). I'd say that I could probably easily save $33 a month plenty of ways, perhaps not going out to eat as often (considering how unhealthy it is I should probably stop anyway). I mean honestly has anyone seen out of state tuition? FSU is such a steal for a good education
