Thanks for the info! Your response made me do some research. My mom has been unemployed for more than 9 months and we didnt report it to anyone because it didnt seem to matter with the FAFSA lookind at last years tax returns. So I called my Financial Aid director at the college -- and they put it the correct information! And YES!!! I am now eligible!!! My mom was so excited she cried - and cried! Do you really think at this point in the process it is just verification and that we may really have funding for four years????

| umm... more of an explanation...?
Can someone please define "unmet need"? Specficially, looking at loans - if the school offers them, GMS cannot be used to replace loans?

did you all get your 'financial aid packet' yet? i only recieved my CALGRANT.. and the letter says to strictly enclose the funding you'll be recieving from the SCHOOL.. it says nothing about any other funding like FAFSA nor cal grant for that matter.. so what are we suppose to put exactly?

I got my first finaid app from Johns Hopkins. It costs $45150. They gave me $44550. LOL. But if minus the loan and the work study, that's only 39550 in award/money that I don't have to pay or work for. I still have a $2500 loan each year, and a $2500 to make up for work study. This is the self-help portion. Almost at every university, the self-help is around 5Kish. So even though I qualify for GATES. It's not like I really need it. And unmet need means loans, so yes GATES can be used to replace loans. Isn't that awesome?
Still awaiting those financial aid packages from MIT, Williams, Columbia, and Berkeley (where I'm a Regents' & Chancellor's Scholar, thus that's a full ride to CAL).
Where else have you guys been accepted to?

Yeah, I'm hoping I get GATE's cuz that means a full ride! i haven't gotten any major scholarships but i've been hearing from small companies. so far i have $2000 in scholarships. not bad. hopefully i get more.
those are great schools static! atleast you have great options to choose from. good luck!

So when exactly do they tell you if you got the scholarship or not??? Early or late may??? What if you get another full ride scholarship?? I am confused. I'm up for the Terry Scholarship at UT Austin too....oh yeah, if I get a scholarship freshman year but its a one time thing, will the GATES make up for it the next year?? I need help!!!

i got a call from the gates people yesterday, and she was just telling me i have to have all materials in by april 22, and the sooner u get them in, the better....she said the decision would be out by may 11, and maybe sooner than that....
i also asked her how many people got it to this round, and she said she cant disclose the number, but she said only 1000 people get the scholarship....

It seems that reception of letters or rather sporadic. Some people have gotten letters, some emails, some phone calls, from cali to nyc. oOo: I wouldn't be discouraged until you get a letter. You'll either get one that says you're cool or one that says you lose.

I honestly don't understand what's the purpoes of GATES for low income students. I gotten financial aid packages from MIT, JHU, and Columbia so far. And seriously, full ride. They're paying for 44000/45000. I guess getting GATES would be cool since you don't have to take out loans and do work study, but it seems like we're letting him off easy with this money thing.
p.s. i'm torn about colleges...sigh just got into stanford today so the choice will that much more hard.
