Life on the Vern? Honestly. Social life killer or tranquil refuge?

Daughter will probably be assigned housing there. Considering an appeal, but do see lots of pros. I don't want her in Thurston - don't think she can study enough - and it's pretty grungy.

Please share your thoughts on life on the Vern.

Vernon is like the "spa". Nice rooms, beautiful, clean , swimming pool, sport fields, nothing bad to say. It really depends on what she likes. Thurston is not as bad as described in previous posts, but smells funny, and looks older. However, plenty studying is done there, and students do well wether they are in Thurston or not.

Not enrolled at GWU, but have a friend there in the honors program, who showed me around when I was making my last round of decisions. In regards to living, she told me NOT to live in Thurston. If your D is in the honors program, my friend highly recommended living in those places. There were three dorms she did recommend. I can't remember them, but I know one was Lafayette, and I think one of the other might have been something named after a President? Madison? In regards to the Vern she advised me against it, even though I was originally planning on requesting it. She said that while the facilities were nice, her friends living there felt a little removed. She talked about how while the Bus ride sounds fine in theory, it's a lot more inconvenient in practice, further from most friends, classes, and the library. She especially talked abut how if she were to wake up 10 minutes before her class started, she could roll out of bed, start walking, and be 5 minutes early, while a trek from the Vern requires a bit more planning to make almost half an hour between transit time, waiting for a bus to depart, walking from the bus stop to the class, etc. She commented that it works better for organized people than the disorganized.
