Exactly how competitive IS GTown?

I'm not considering Georgetown for myself, but a friend of mine is and I'm wondering exactly how competitive it is.

Normally I'd think I had a pretty good handle on chances and such, but two of my older friends applied there, and both got rejected.

One had a 2280 on the SAT I, stellar ECs, and a very good GPA/rank. She got deferred, rejected (maybe waitlisted, I forget) and ended up going to American.

The other had a 2370 on the SAT I, traditional "jack of all trades master of none" ECs, and stellar GPA/rank. He got waitlisted and ended up going to Cornell.

Are these typical cases or rare ones?

those seem like rare cases to me.

i got accepted last year with 2210 SAT, 770/750/660 sat2's, with only a few ECs, but i was extremely active and successful in each of them. gpa was 3.89, top 10% in a class of ~150 at a public magnet arts school.

Georgetown is not as competitive as it pretends to be. I know a lot of people who got in with a quite low SAT score and/or only average school grades. A lot depends on your application essay and on your recommendations (at least thats the feeling I have).
If you ask me, Georgetown should be marked as "selective", not "very selective"..

georgetown is definitely highly selective but they do look for candidates differently from other schools...so having good stats is not always a one-way ticket
