I submitted the application, but..

I submitted my application a week ago by mail.

The thing is, I haven't gotten any online confirmation from Georgetown that they received my application.

Is this normal? Will Georgetown ever inform me? If the application doesn't arrive, how will I find out?

If they don't have it, then a few days after the deadline they should email you and tell you all the stuff they don't have. Or you could call the admissions office... but be nice, they're under a lot of stress right now.

Suppose then my application did not arrive there ontime due to mailing errors, and after a few days they tell me they did not get my application. Would I be penalized then?

As long as your application (I'm assuming you're applying Early Action) was postmarked by November 2, 2009 your app will be considered (even though it may arrive after 11/2). Otherwise it will be put in the RD applicant pool and won't be touched until 1/1/10.

Also applications by mail tend to take a LOT longer to get recognized in the system. I honestly wouldn't worry about it. If they are missing something from you, they will get in touch because even if your paper application (for some incredibly uncommon reason) doesn't get to their office, your test scores will have started a file on you in their office so they know to expect an app from you.
