Admission Stats for Class of 2017

I know many of you are anxious to hear your admissions decision tomorrow and I am not trying to add to that stress. However I remember wanting to know as much information as possible when going through the process with my child that I figured I would share with you this year's admission info just released by GAtech.

From the admissions office:

" This year we experienced a tremendous amount of growth in applications, receiving a total of 17,650. That is 3,000 more applicants than last year, representing a 20 percent increase. Our admit rate will be 40 percent -- making this the first year in Georgia Tech history we've admitted less than 50 percent of applicants. "

In terms of numbers here is the profile for Class of 2017.

Regular Decision Profile

All Applicants: 17,650
Averages: 3.83 GPA, 2050 SAT, 8 AP/IB/Dual Enrollment

Admitted Students: 40 percent Admit Rate
Averages: 3.99 GPA, 2150 SAT, 8 AP/IB/Dual Enrollment

Good luck to everyone tomorrow. I hope everyone gets the news they are hoping for. I can't stress this enough but if you do not get the news you want from GA Tech please that there is a college out there for you that will give you a great education and college experience. My oldest child did not get into any reach schools. This child attends a great university that was a match/safety for this child which they completely love. All the time this child looks back and is thankful for being rejected by the reach schools because the school this child attends really is perfect for this child and they can't think of attending college anywhere else. I will send good thoughts to all of you.

Wow that is incredibly more selective than I originally thought. The Admissions office posted this?

    2150 average SAT? Woah.

The 75th percentile SAT last year was a 2160. That's insane.

This isn't exactly what I wanted to hear the day before decisions.

    Where did you find this?

I do college admissions counseling and receive the ga tech counselor minute report. Since I have a student interested for next year I monitor this forum. This came in our report this morning. I was reluctant to post this info because I remember from my own child how anxious these days can be but I also remember wanting info.

I agree as others have posted that GA Tech is getting more selective because it is receiving more applications. The bad news is that GA Tech just joined the Common Application. When USC joined the Common App it received 20K more applications and went down 10% in acceptance rates. I hope that does not happen next year.

I figured this information may help students with their perspectives. Good luck to everyone.

Wow is right - especially when you see the EA admits that posted on this forum with much lower stats?

My son was deferred with a 34 ACT. I'm a little concerned because he doesn't quite have the GPA listed above. :(

Please everyone remember that this is the average SAT score so 2150 is not necessarily what you need to get in. Remember there are kids with higher scores than that and lower scores than that.

@Twoesses my DS was Accepted EA with a 34 ACT. He did have an 800 on the math SAT though. A 34 ACT is like a SAT 2260. So your DS is above the 2150!. Again the GPA is an average and its the GT GPA which gives wt to AP & IB classes.
