Bro wants to go to GT...

My brother wishes to go to GT but let's just say he had a bumpy ride during freshmen year by getting a D in a non-academic class, as well as some B's.

He straighten up sophomore year with all A's and raised his 3.1 GPA to a 3.5 GPA.

Unfortuntely, he's not big in EC's and only participates in the Graphic Arts Club. He also volunteers in the hospital. Is GT big in EC? Does he need to be more active?

He's going to be a junior this coming year but I want to know what he needs to do to get into GT. He never took any honors and AP classes before but he's going to take an AP class, as well as honor classes this year. Will GT look down at him because he didn't start out HS with honor classes?

What SAT/ACT and GPA should he aim for when applying for GT?

Is there still a chance for him?

I'd suggest him to find more EC's to make him stand out more. As to his bumpy start, I think it's OK as long as he's improving constantly and continues show great potential.

I've seen people get in with GPAs as low as 3.4s (but if the GPA were to be low it should have something else to compensate for it, such as a higher SAT score). As for the SAT scores, I think that its important for him to get a 650+math score (afterall, its a tech school).

Yes a 30+ will help and the ACT range is ~ 26-31

And by 30+ or the ACT range, do you mean as a composite or for the math and english section only?

tech doesn't really look at ECs as much as other schools. they really like high SATs/ACTs though

I talked with one of the admissions counselors about how they decide who gets admitted. First he said that they weighed your GPA, and it can increase by .3 or more if you took a lot of honors/AP classes. He wouldn't tell me specifically how they weighed it, though. He also said that they give your essay a score from 1-6, and that if you're on the bubble it can be a deal-maker or a deal-breaker. He also said if your weighted GPA is 3.8+, your SAT is 1800+, and you write a decent essay, then you are in extremely good shape for admission.
