I'm going to put this out there. What UCLA has posted are averages. That means that there may have been people who scored below or above the scores they posted and still got in. Given that your verbal score is hovering around their average, albeit lower, you're not too far off what they would expect. If you have a strong GPA, LORs, and can cultivate a strong SOP, I would still go for it.
That's just my 2 cents. I'm sure there are others there that could give more sound advice.
And thanks for the advice, Juillet!

Hello Everyone,
I just took my GRE today. I am an electrical engineering student applying to grad schools.
GPA = 3.67. 1 internship. 4 semesters of research in Physics.
I got: 164Q/163V
Will this score keep me from any of the schools I'm applying to?
I'm applying to the following:
UCLA
UC Davis
UC Irvine
ASU
University of Colorado, Boulder
UT Austin
Texas A&M

| scores too low?
I took the revised GRE and got a combined score of 306.
151 Q
155 V
4.5 AW
I want to pursue a PhD in cancer biology. Can anyone recommend schools I might have shot at getting into, and am I too far off the mark for schools like Wake Forest, MUSC, USF, and Vanderbilt?
From the GRE score concordance chart, thats the equivalent of a 640 Q/530 V.
I have a BA in Biochemistry, 3.35 cumulative GPA, 3.28 in the sciences. (I was undergoing chemotherapy while I was in college)

Sorry, guys. I have a lot of questions this time around.
I took the Biology subject test and got my scores in today. I scored 750/800 which is 76th percentile overall. 88th percentile cell molecular bio, 76th percentile organismal, and ecology/evolution is 50th percentile (I spent a day studying that part). I'm overall pleased with my scores, especially since I'm looking at cell and molecular bio as my specialty.
Now my question is, for the schools that encourage or recommend subject tests, are these good enough scores to send out? I don't come from a big name school at all, and my GRE general scores aren't fantastic, albeit good.

My bad, it's a 750/990 after looking. I forgot it's not on the conventional scale.

I have a similar question. I'm applying to cancer/cell&molecular bio top 10 biomed schools. 163Q, 155V, 4.5AW. My professor said these scores may hurt. So, I took the biochem gre test with a 81% overall: 92%cell, 84%biochem, 55%molecular. Do you think that this score is good enough to compensate my GRE score? Should I submit these scores? I worked in a big-name lab, high GPA, strong recs, 1 first author pub.
FYI: I'm an international student. Stanford is one of my top choices, and they will use gre score for the initial review.

Hi,
I am looking to apply to a masters in computer science (MS) and/or computer science-related fields (robotics, math, machine learning, etc.)
GRE: 169Q, 163V
Undergraduate major: BS in Computer Science
Undergrad GPA: 3.38 <--yea, I know it's low
Research Exp: None
I am 2 years out of school. I work in the IT industry in Texas and should get fairly good LORs from my supervisors (I've been too long out of school to have any professor recs...)
I want to go back to school and possibly pursue a different field.
My question is how can I improve my application? I know my GPA is weak but I honestly can't change that. I don't have any professor recs that I'd feel would be more important than supervisor recs... And I don't have any research experience but I am not looking for specifically for a research-based track. Course-based would work well for me.
What are your thoughts on my application as it currently stands and what are some things that I can work on?

Hi, i got a 152 on the Verbal Section which was disappointing for me; not that much disappointing since i was preparing for the test just for 2 weeks. But the universities of course don't know that...What are my chances in entering an Ivy league university for graduate studies in Comparative Lit.?
Toefl ibt: 100
BA: Excellent (more than 8.5 out of 10)

Hi everyone, in terms of GRE scores, I've been looking at web sites for various PhD programs to get an idea of what the average scores might be, but it seems that most schools don't give this information.

Hey Elocin, I think your scores look solid. If you write about your research in your statements, it should stand on its own.

CSCmeta, are you sure that GRE scores are used to determine who gets interviews? I don't know if the cutoff is as sharp as you might believe though, maybe it plays a role, but other aspects of your application probably matter as well.

I believe that >= 90th percentile in GRE Q should be safe (doesn't help much, but won't hurt)

Hi everybody,
I'm going to be applying for evolutionary biology and molecular biology programs for fall 2014 (specializing in evo devo). I was going to apply this year, but I recently decided I wanted a year off to work and relax a bit. I did take the gre just before the conversion to the new format and received:
Q: 730 (157 converted)
V: 590 (159 converted)
AW: 4.5
I was satisfied with these scores, but for some reason my percentiles dropped quite a bit from the conversion. I was wondering if I should retake (I'm worried about the quant score) the gre. I really don't want to spend the time/money on it, but if it could hinder my app I certainly would. I just feel guilty not taking them with the extra time I have, but I am worried about my ability to match that verbal score, though I am confident I could get a higher quant score.
I intend to apply to some top 10 programs like Harvard, Stanford, and Berkeley. I graduated with a 3.924 GPA in biology from a state research university. I will have 3+ years research experience in the same lab with 1 first author pub and 2-3 middle author pubs. I have strong LORs lined up.
Thanks for your opinion in advance!

Hi everyone!
I'm new to CC; I'm in the process of completing my applications and a sudden freak-out over my GREs inspired me to look for some external advice. I'm 1.5 years out of college, with a B.S. in Biology. I graduated with a 3.52 overall GPA and 3.5 major GPA, completed my college's Honors Program, and was inducted into my school's Biological Sciences Honor Society, in which I was president for my final year. I also participated in an undergraduate internship at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, and have been working as a lab technician for my alma mater since I matriculated.
I took the General GRE on 11/19 and received the following:
151Q (48th percentile)
162V (89th percentile)
3.5AW (30th percentile; yuck)
I thought I did quite well on the AW upon completion of the test, but this just goes to show you that scoring is very subjective depending on your rater(s). The following are schools to which I am applying, in order of preference, followed by their rank on the US News Best Biological Science Programs (2010):
Stony Brook University, #68
St. John's University, #220
SUNY Upstate Medical University, #160
North Carolina State University, #82
University of Maryland at Baltimore, #100
I've noticed that many, if not most, of the users inquiring about potential for acceptance/rejection are applying to top programs and schools. I'm applying to the above because of my knowledge of the research conducted at each of these schools and how I believe I will fit. I'm hoping to follow the advice on the first post of this thread, which is not to worry about my AW score for I'm quite happy about my verbal. I have strong LoR's from research professors who have worked with me both as an undergraduate and as a staff member.
Any thoughts?
