PhD in business fields

What factors make one stand out as an applicant for a PhD in a business field? In sciences it is research, is business focused on work experience or should one be doing some sort of research?

I know for sciences the GRE is not as important as the research & publications. What do business adcoms emphasize in admissions?

Research is pretty much the key. A Ph.D in any field is about mastering the art and science of doing publishable research on that subject.

MBA programs care about work experience, but that's an entirely different professional degree centered on practical applications.
