Didn't know my PI personally, asking for a LOR

So I have been doing research in a lab where it was mostly ran by the graduate students with the PI coming in and out of the lab a lot of the time. I became close to the graduate students who I've spent countless hours with but never really had a chance to get to know the PI himself. He has agreed to write me a letter of recommendation but did I make a mistake by not getting to know him? He is a particularly busy professor that has multiple labs so I feel as though he never really had the time to just sit and observe me.

can anyone relate?

Happens all the time. Collect his letter, get into grad school, and continue on with your life.

In grad school for your thesis lab, choose a younger PI who has more time to spend with you (if that's what you're looking for).
