Affects of a 8 year old LOW GPA

I entered the best undergrad engineering college in my country (internationally reputed) 12 years ago as an adolescent and messed up my grades graduating 8 years ago with a GPA of 2.8 on 4 on the American scale.

After I started working in a relevant job I have become highly interested in my subject(its still the same). I have worked in a major corporate research department for 5 years, published 6 papers and filed for many patents (> 10). My GRE scores are 800Q, 670V and 5.0AWA.

I am wondering what chances do I stand in trying to enter a good PHD program if any. Recent threads on how admissions work make me think that I wont even make the cut to be able to get an audience with the admissions committee.

I have been writing to many professors, they do encourage me to apply but are only willing to talk further on research funding after I get an admission.

Very generally speaking, your most recent experience is most heavily weighted -- admissions committees will be more interested in your work experience than in your undergraduate GPA.

You should definitely go for it. I agree with mollie, the committees will care more about your recent (and long) experience than the undergrad work. Address it in your statement of purpose and emphasize that despite your undergrad work, you continued to achieve and excel in your field.
