Deferring admissions?

I am hoping to apply for a Masters program in engineering (probably mechanical engineering or something related).

Some questions about deferring offers:

1.) After receiving an offer, is it possible to defer it? Or is deferring only possible if I let the schools know in advance (i.e. on the application)?

2.) If I defer an offer, would I still get the same financial aid as in the original offer?

3.) If I defer an offer, do I have to go to that particular school after the gap year? Can apply to a different school?

4.) If I defer an offer, can I change my mind later (i.e. decide not to take a year off, and just start the program immediately, as long as the school year hasn't started yet)?

This is done on a department by department basis. Ask the department.
