Computer purchase?

Our son-incoming freshman-needs a laptop and software for his work at college (just the usual stuff) but we don't want to buy something that the school can't support-especially if they have deals for incoming freshman. Will they be sending out info on this? Do they have some kind of deal for students?

My D is also incoming freshman and she just got a MacBook - right now they are running something with a discount and a free ipod Touch if you are a full-time college student. Check the Mac website. If you have a PC in mind, look through the paperwork you got recently (with bill payment info, health ins, etc). There was something in there about PC laptops thru the school. Grinnell supports both PC and Mac.

Son and hubby did a lot of research and purchased a HP laptop the summer before. He loves having his own portable unit. It has worked really well for him. I can't remember about deals. I think they did send out some info.

Do students need to bring their own printer or are there printers located strategically around campus for kids to use? Is there a charge to print?

Waxfam, I went through the paperwork I received from the cashier-nothing about laptops. Was this a separate brochure? I'll have S call the school.

M's mom, it was a one page kind of thing, like an advertisement as I recall. Sorry, I threw it away since she went with Mac. Call the school.

Printing is free and convenient. My son doesn't have one. He says some kids do.

Waxfam,
My daughter has had a printer at school for her first 2 years. It died 2 months before the 2nd semester was over. She said she doesn't want to replace it because she can print to any printer on campus for free.

My son had an iMac for the first couple of years, and then a MacBook. He was quite happy with both. He brought a printer with him freshman year, but rarely used it.

I received a brochure that had some laptops listed too. However, the ones listed were particularly expensive, and the specifications that they had were not that great. You can get a great laptop for a great price. Go to Newegg.com - Computer Parts, PC Components, Laptop Computers, Digital Cameras and more!. This site has some fantastic deals. Tell us your price range so that we can help you in your search.
