i love Grinnell (so far) but...

i read on collegepr0wler that the townspeople can be racist/rude towards the students sometimes. okok, i know collegepr0wler isn't the most reliable college website around but i appreciate how it touches on some issues that other sites won't (such as racism).

Grinnell is my number one choice so far, i've pushed every other small northeastern & californian LAC way behind Grinnell. but then again, i'm an asian american who's lived in nyc since age 6. i've been confronted with racism but i'm still wary of Grinnell, the town.

any feedback would be much appreciated

wow, has anyone noticed how the site bleeps out the world "pr0wler?" LOL

First, the resource you are referring to is way out of date. There are many new student facilities since it was written and the food is outstanding these days (S is vegetarian and not easy to please in this respect). There are numerous other changes as well but rather than list than all, I suggest you find a more current source of information. Second, S is Asian and has experienced no racism at all-in fact, he is astounded by how courteous townspeople are. Of course, he can not speak to how welcome other minorities feel, but that is his personal experience. He noted that if someone is mowing their lawn and you walk by in conversation, they will turn off the mower until you pass so as not to disturb you! Grinnell makes an enormous effort to keep town/gown relationships cordial-townies are welcome at all the college's performances for free, use the gym, etc...

I'd be interested in hearing from other minorities at Grinnell about their experiences and whether S's experience is representative.

FWIW, I'm Asian and lived in Iowa for 10 years (Des Moines). Race was never an issue. People in Iowa are very friendly. My daughter is looking at Grinnell as well. Good luck!
