So, R4484, did you visit Hamilton & Bowdoin this weekend? If so, what were your impressions?
I think the advice to spend the night is quite sound. My DD did that at her top 3 (Hamilton, Middlebury & Claremont McKenna) and chose to apply ED to Hamilton.
I have nephews at Bowdoin, Williams, Lewis & Clark and Cornell. Everyone is happy with their choice.
Loved 'em both. I think I liked Bowdoin a little better at first because of its integration into the town. It made the campus feel more suburban and less isolated. I also loved the girl who did my tour and my admissions officer was a real character who made time for me every time I was on campus. It felt a little more home-y out of the gate.
But I liked Hamilton a lot too. I liked the fitness center better at Hamilton. It was closer to the center of campus and had a climbing wall. They were still building the new ice rink when I was at Bowdoin. And I like the sushi bar at Hamilton. Even though the food at Bowdoin is supposed to be awesome, I think I liked my meal in Commons better.
Finally, I think I liked the people at Hamilton more. They were more outgoing, friendlier and more personable than the students I met at Bowdoin (and I did an overnight at Bowdoin). I got the feeling that the Bowdoin kids were more cut-throat and more aggressive and the Hamilton kids were more laid back. That could have just been the small cross section of people I met, or it could be a trend, but it kind of made my mind up for me.
I am going to be a sophomore at hamilton and my sister just graduated from bowdoin. as penelopepitstop said, the kids at hamilton are much more laid back and dont have that Type A quality about them that Bowdoin kids do. The food my whole family agrees is better at Hamilton despite Bowdoin's superior reviews. My sister loved Bowdoin but the social scene was limited and just from visiting she could tell that Hamilton kids had a better social scene. The people are nicer at Hamilton and more willing to talk about how much they love their school. If you are looking for an amazing academic school but that is very competitive and uptight then Bowdoin is for you. If you are looking for another amazing academic school that is more personable with a better social life, then choose Hamilton.
