flying under the radar

My d was accepted at Hamilton, and she is thrilled. We both *love* the school, and she will attend - if we can afford it. Unfortunately, that is a big IF, but that is another topic.

One thing that attracts me to Hamilton is that it flies under the radar. It's a wonderful, wonderful school that most people here in my neck of the woods have not even heard of. I'm not sure why that appeals to me; maybe it's because I don't like prestige-chasing, and here is a school that offers top quality without quite the wow factor of the Ivys.

Anyway, I was wondering if Hamilton has a higher profile in other parts of the country, or if it's just me and my circle of friends who are in the dark about this great school. If it truly is low profile elsewhere, why do you suppose that is?

The same is here! I find it odd though, because even when I travel to other states Hamilton is not too well known. However it may be a southern thing, because I know little people who are familiar with similar schools as well, like colgate.

Funny. We first heard of the school when we were in the Pacific northwest visiting colleges on the west coast! Struck up a conversation with a father-son pair who was visiting the same campus. The Dad had gone to Hamilton and said enough about it to cause us to start researching it as soon as we got home from the trip.

My D is a freshman at Hamilton. This school completely flies under the radar even hear in the Northeast. I have learned a lot about the schools reputation. Whenever someone asks where my D attends, the response is ALWAYS one of two. Oh, where is that? or Oh, what a great school!! The response NEVER differs. But, I will tell you, that the people who you would want to know, they know. We live near Wall Street and the banking and financial business. They all know about Hamilton. A friend is a CEO of a big insurance company, says they hire H grads all the time. It is well known in the graduate school world. Great place to be coming from if you are heading to Grad School.

Suffice it to say, that if your D attends, she will be forever faced with people not having a clue about it, but she can rest assured that the ones who do know are the important ones

Good luck in your decision making.

In the northeast it is considered a high level LAC and well regarded. I loved the feel there from the admissions people, visited in the fall it was beautiful. Someone on the bowdoin site wrote a similar message.
