Harvard (SSP) Summer School?

Let me get straight to the questions:

1) What is the total price for harvard's SSP 4 week and 8 week program? On their website they put around 4K for Room and Board and another 4k for tuition, and all other stuff included a total of $10,000? The website is not specific.

2) There have been many sides to this so, in your opinion will this help you get in to Harvard?

3) There is no certain 'limit' to the number of people who get accepted into the SSP right?

1) 4 week is $4600 + books + spending which will probably come around to ~$5200-$5400
8 week is $9200 + books + spending which will be around $10 000 - $11 0000
next summer though, they're only doing 7 week sessions because real harvard is changing its calender around

2) no. Everyone there knows it, all the faculty says it. However, they do offer countless workshops for admissions throughout the summer and also offer mock interviews which are nice. The proctors/tutors/general people stuck around there are infact harvard students and it's always nice getting to hear their experiences. If you're lucky and you get stuck in a small class, there is a chance you can get your professor to write you a letter of recommendation. And it's a blast anyways.

3) i think due to the number of classes they offer, it's actually "capped" around 1000

Do you happen to know what type of financial aid they give to current Harvard students. I believe I have found a research position for next summer, and I was thinking of taking a class or two while I was there.

Financial aid for summer school is, or was for me this past summer, loans only for current students, and I figure will stay that way for the time being, here's a link:

Harvard College Financial Aid Office - Enrolled Students - Summer School Financial Aid

Though, if you're planning on doing research, you'll either get a stipend (for the better research positions) or you can apply for a research grant, though I don't have the link for that.

Also, you might consider applying to become a proctor, they'll cover room and board and one course (you can't take two), but summer school doesn't really have a lot of concentration related selections anyway. So perhaps proctoring is financially the best idea.

I was told that it would be a paid research position, so that would pay part of the way.

Is that one course the whole summer or one course per 4 weeks?

One 4 credit course running through the summer term is what's allowed. 8 credit and short session courses can't be taken by proctors (from what a few of my proctor friends this past summer told me).

I know one kid who went to Harvard summer school and did get an offer this last fall....you have to do well if you go....I was accepted and didn't go to summer school, so it doesn't really matter, unless you do really well.

To answer your second question, no, it doesn't affect your admission odds.

I agree it doesn't increase admission odds at all, but it is impressive to bring up in your interview. It shows interest in Harvard.
However, I have been told that only 2% of SSP students get into Harvard.
I got in to SSP and Harvard, but I don't know if that was a coincidence.

As for the 2% thing, I have to assume that, that number comes from the number of SSP students who end up enrolling. It wouldn't make much sense for someone to have previously taken classes there to have a much worse rate of admission.

Has anyone petitioned to take the Restricted courses? I would really like to take the Intensive Intro to CS using Java. The prerequisites are Pre-Calc and I took that 3 years ago. Currently taking MV Calc and DE at a local college. Do they usually allow Juniors into those classes?

Thank you.

Harvard Secondary School Program Summer 2009

I am going to Harvard for 7 weeks this summer. I've been assigned to a Hollis Hall Dorm. How is that dorm set up? For those that have been there in the summer, what advice can you offer me? I hear it is hot and muggy, and for the Dorm, I should either rent or bring a fan and bring a lamp. What else? How are the excursions? What are "not to be missed" sights to see? Where to go for the 4th of July? Thanks!

Hollis Hall is usually a freshman dorm but is used for the High School Program during the summer. The rooms are very large and accomodate 2 people. There are 8 people to a floor and a bathroom per floor. Hollis is in a fantastic location in the Old Yard. Harvard University Map

If you are able to bring a fan, I would say bring it! The rental opportunities are from HSA and can be quite expensive.

The excursions are fantastic and I would recommend that you also have a look at the trips to other colleges.

Congratulations on your admission! Its going to be a great summer!

I know quite a few people who did SSP and NONE of them were accepted. However, I didn't do it and I was. So if you're looking solely for an admissions boost, I wouldn't waste the 10k.
