| Decision: Accepted Reflection- Strengths: Extracurriculars, course load, school rank
- Weaknesses: SAT score, ACT score (composite was 34)
- Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I showed my passion for my hobbies and showed how it can turn into something fruitful
General Comments: I was very surprised. I was preparing that I would get waitlisted, so I was already thinking about choosing between Duke and Columbia (I didn't get into Columbia yet, but I thought I stood a very good chance). I received the news from my father since I was at a science competition. I was in shock and denial...I called my dad again to make sure he didn't read wrong. I didn't actually believe my acceptance until I checked the e-mail, myself. And the acceptance didn't sink in until I was trying to sleep, during which time I laid awake for two hours. I was also accepted to Columbia, Duke, and Cornell. I was waitlisted at Tufts. |

| Decision: Waitlisted Objective:- SAT I (breakdown): 2180; V: 760/M:660/W: 760
- ACT:
- SAT II: Biology: 690; U.S. history: 790; literature: 780
- Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 4.0
- Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 3/719 --> (midyear) 2/691
- AP (place score in parenthesis): European History (5), Biology (5), Calculus BC (5)
- IB (place score in parenthesis): haven't taken any of the tests yet but HL Math, HL English, HL History, HL Spanish, SL Physics, SL Psychology
- Senior Year Course Load: all IB classes
- Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): National Merit Finalist
Subjective:- Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Mock Trial (vice-president), Cross Country, Peer Tutoring, Liberty in North Korea, California Scholarship Federation, Academic Decathlon (leader of Honors team)
- Job/Work Experience:
- Volunteer/Community service: Big Brothers/Big Sisters, junior high ministry at local church
- Summer Activities:
- Essays:
- Teacher Recommendation: HL History and English teachers; saw the English teacher's and thought it was fairly good
- Counselor Rec: I.B. coordinator and known me since freshman year, thought it was pretty amazing
- Additional Rec:
- Interview: yes with an alumni, thought it went simply 'okay'
Other- State (if domestic applicant): CA
- Country (if international applicant):
- School Type: public
- Ethnicity: Filipino
- Gender: female
- Income Bracket: upper middle-class
- Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.):
Reflection- Strengths: rigorous course load
- Weaknesses: lack of leadership in extra-currics
- Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I think I had fairly good stats and solid essay and recs so that's why they didn't out-right reject me but my decent extra-currics and just the competitiveness of the applicant pool and low admittance rate this year meant I got wait-listed
General Comments: Congratulations to all those accepted! I was surprised to even get wait-listed and actually don't feel too bad about it because I applied to Harvard for my mom and always thought I'd enjoy it more for grad school. For those wait-listed or not accepted, please don't be too hard on yourself.
I think we'll all end up going where we're meant to be and I don't plan on staying on the waiting list but have decided to attend University of Pittsburgh. |

Rep), Chess Team (Capt), Academic Quiz Team (Capt), Peer Counseling (Group Leader), Ultimate Frisbee, SciOly (Co-Pres), Club Soccer for 8 years until surgery (Team Capt, ODP State Team, selected as one of the top 100 players in the nation)

- Summer Activities: Research Intern, Work, Volunteer, Ultimate league
- Essays: I thought they were really good...

- Counselor Rec: He knows me really well, but 700 students per class...

- Interview: Thought it went well
Other- State (if domestic applicant): OH
- Country (if international applicant):
- School Type: Large Public, never sends anyone to good schools. Last two #1s went to Case Western and Michigan...
- Ethnicity: Asian
- Gender: Male
- Income Bracket: Need financial aid
- Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): None
Reflection- Strengths: Test scores, perfect on 9 AP tests, ECs were alright, my GPA was amazing--the next highest are all around 4.7, highest ever was only 4.8 (hopefully my counselor talked about that), great essays
- Weaknesses: ASIAN MALE, Large crappy public school, maybe I don't have enough volunteering or ECs, lack of research, not so good recs?
- Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: When I first applied, I wasn't really expecting to get in at all, considering my school's record and my Asian maleness. But then I made Yale early, made Stanford, receiving one of only 100 likely letters, and made MIT. So I was pretty confident, but got waitlisted by Harvard and Princeton.
I don't know what happened. Anyone have any explanation? Looking at some of the other profiles of those who made it, I don't understand why I got waitlisted by both....sigh. General Comments: Good Luck to everyone who got in!! |
