I'm not really hellbent on going to Harvard, it is the only school that waitlisted me. And I'm not like everyone else here that is most likely going to an Ivy League School, I will most likely attend UCLA in the fall, and I don't regret my decision at all. But if I were offered admission, I would totally take it, because I'm sure that the opportunities there would be phenomenal. But, at any rate, I'm still happy with where I'm going. :-)

.....I just wish they would reply soon :-(

And dude! 1nkbl0tch (hard to type :P) and other people who got into MIT should be much chiller about this entire process. I'm pretty sure Harvard's fin. aid.'s better than MIT's, but you're essentially in the same place! One of the greatest draw I get from Harvard is its location (proximity to Boston!) and international draw (in terms of having lots of really awesome people as speakers over on both campuses, etc.) AND you can cross-register! :P (I didn't apply to MIT, but still!)

And what's up with the 144? Gosh, Harvard is a lot more bureaucratic and manipulative than I thought. What's up with the "no ranking" of waitlists and this thing which is synonymous with ranking?

...so the "first wave" is already sent out and the rest of us will hear back end of May / beginning of June? Fun stuff.

Matatdor,

I also am planning on attending Duke and I also had to choose between Duke and Vandy-- it was a tough choice but I am pretty happy now. I'm thinking about a major in econ and possibly a minor in engineering. What major are you considering?

Is anyone begining to feel manipulated by the way Harvard is managing this process? Some straightforward, specific communication would go a long way to relieving unnecessary stress - beginning with:
- disclosing how many are on the wait list with more specificity than "several hundred"
- how many decisions of the "over 200" to be admitted off the list have already been made
- how many of those accepted off the wait list have been informed that they have been admitted?
But to keep everyone at fever pitch, Harvard is dribbling out acceptances and information - they're determined to maintain that sense of exclusivity. It's offensive. Didn't Johns Hopkins (and maybe other schools) have an admissions officer who - gasp! - actually gave accurate information in his blog about about when decisions would be mailed out, etc. this year? Why can't Havard have the basic good manners to give enough accurate information so that over 70 kids/families on this forum who are smart/talented/hardworking/lucky enough to be on the waitlist don't waste an enormous amount of time and their considerable intellectual power chasing rumors, trying to piece together fragmentary information:144? 147? changes in the number of the facebook group? Small waitlist? Huge - 2-3000?
That's my rant - I'm hoping a good buddy will get of the waitlist and join me here next year, but the arrogance of Harvard is so obnoxious, maybe he's better off elsewhere. Honestly!

One thing I like much more about MIT than Harvard: how the number of the people on the waitlist, the number they're taking off, and the number they plan to keep on until later are all posted clearly on their blogs.

Yes it is offensive. What can we do? Nothing. I still have more than 1000 pages to read for USABO finals and I'm feverishly refreshing this thread and staring at my phone. I gave up after today. If I get a call, great. If not, I'm perfectly happy with MIT.

Good luck to everyone else. I really hope most of us get a call soon.

The University of Chicago, where I will be attending if Harvard does away with me, is also wonderful about keeping an updated blog outlining how the admissions process is taking place. I suppose Harvard can do what it does because people will come regardless.
