Its irrelevant if you need your car to move things in and can't park your car in the yard.

In any case, the only type of microwave that is allowed in the frosh dorms is one that you have to rent from Harvard Student Agencies (HSA)
This is the least-enforced rule ever. And the whole idea behind it is very strange (see The Harvard Crimson :: Magazine :: What If It Were All a Lie? ). That said, I don't think a microwave is a necessity.

Also - even though you may be able to move in earlier if you do Dorm Crew (and a bit later if you're coming back from FOP), it doesn't matter too much, because you can't really choose beds/rooms until all of your roommates arrive.

Guitars101: I don't recall what time they said move-in began. We got there about half an hour before the specified time, which was definitely a good move.

I'm a freshman, so I went through all of this relatively recently. I remember getting there at around 7:30 am maybe? (We had stayed over in a hotel and my parents needed to leave asap). We were definitely early, one of the first cars, but they opened the gates to the yard pretty much right when we got there. Getting there early was a good move, it was much less congested. We brought most essentials but then had a quick trip to Target to get things we had forgotten. I also bought a fridge and microwave at home and drove up with them--best idea ever, don't get anything from HSA. The one annoying thing, which just_forget_me alluded to, is that you need to wait for everyone to get there before you start moving in to your room (unless roommates can somehow pick out who gets which room ahead of time--or at least who gets doubles vs. singles). Try to coordinate when you're all arriving so that you don't have to sit around and wait for hours before you can choose bedrooms.

Do the cars just lline up outside the Yard now? When we moved my daughter in in 2004 they had a staging area in an empty parking lot over in Alston, and they took us over to the Yard in caravans of 3 or 4 cars at a time. As I recall we had a ticket that assigned us a time to show up at the staging lot. It seemed to work reasonably well to ease the congestion and waiting in line at the Yard.

We were also in the staging area a few years after you ... there were no tickets with assigned times. There were lines set up for each freshman dorm.

Sorry if I wasn't clear...there's still the lot in Allston, and as twinmom said, you get in line based on freshman dorms and then they lead you right over to the yard in small groups. Getting there earlier is good because you avoid the inevitable congestion of tons of cars lining up in a relatively small area--my dad actually had to go back in the line again a second time in the mid-afternoon and he said it was overflowing and took forever.

Sorry if this sounds ignorant, but we are new to this ... Will my son already know who his roomates or suitemates will be prior to arriving at Harvard? Does the school send out this info so that the students can coordinate prior to arriving? Thanks in advance

. . . and students-to-be at Harvard are eminently Google-able so you can get some sense of what your roommate(s) are like in advance.

Depending on the dorm you are in, sometimes you can even find pictures of the rooms and sort of decide who gets what room (the room across from me did this so that all of them were able to start moving in whenever they arrived).

Which can be a little intimidating if your soon-to-be roommate is a superstar of some sort with many more honors, newspaper articles, and other google hits than you have.

My daughter was worried that her roommate would google her and think that she had written and posted all that bad poetry out there that was actually written by another girl of the same name.

Do we get rooming assignment early summer? or is it relatively close to the beginning of the semester?
